Dolly Parton and Walmart announced a combined $12 million in Hurricane Helene relief commitments on October 4, 2024. The total adds three separate pledges: Parton’s $1 million personal donation to Mountain Ways Foundation, a $1 million matching pledge from her East Tennessee businesses and The Dollywood Foundation, and a $10 million commitment from Walmart, Sam’s Club and the Walmart Foundation. The commitments were not one transfer, and the full $12 million was not directed to Mountain Ways.
How the $12 million total is made up
| Donor | Announced amount | Recipient or scope |
|---|---|---|
| Dolly Parton personally | $1 million | Mountain Ways Foundation, for assistance to Hurricane Helene flood victims |
| Parton’s East Tennessee businesses and The Dollywood Foundation | $1 million | A matching pledge tied to Parton’s donation to Mountain Ways Foundation |
| Walmart, Sam’s Club and the Walmart Foundation | $10 million, increased from $6 million | Relief support across Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee |
| Combined announced commitments | $12 million | Sum of the three commitments above |
The announcement was made at Walmart store #678 in Newport, Tennessee. Parton’s businesses named in the matching pledge were Dollywood Parks & Resorts, Dolly Parton’s Stampede, and Pirates Voyage Dinner & Show. The Dollywood-originated announcement described Mountain Ways Foundation as a registered 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to helping flood victims. (Walmart’s October 4, 2024 announcement; Dollywood-originated announcement.)
What the announcement does—and does not—say
The $12 million figure is a total of announced commitments, not a report that all the money had already been paid out. The two Parton-related commitments add up to $2 million for Mountain Ways Foundation. Walmart’s separate $10 million commitment was described as broader support for affected communities in five states; it should not be counted as a donation to Mountain Ways.
Walmart also said its stores and Sam’s Club locations were providing local help, including food, hot meals, water distributions, showers and laundry facilities. Those services were described as relief activity, separate from the announced financial commitment.

Why Walmart’s commitment changed
Walmart, Sam’s Club and the Walmart Foundation announced that their commitment was increasing from $6 million to $10 million. John Furner, then Walmart U.S. president and CEO, said: “We’ll support people and communities until they’ve recovered.” The announcement did not provide a breakdown of the $10 million among the three Walmart entities or specify how much had been distributed by that date.
What Parton said about the donation
At the Newport announcement, Parton said, “These are special people here; they’re my people,” and added, “I can’t stand to see anyone hurting, so I wanted to do what I could to help after these terrible floods.” Her personal donation and the matching pledge connected the contribution to Mountain Ways Foundation, rather than to a general Walmart relief fund.

How to evaluate a disaster-relief donation
For readers considering how to help people affected by a disaster, the Associated Press’s immediate post-Helene guidance advised giving cash to organizations already working in the specific affected area, checking whether a contribution is matched, and recognizing that rebuilding can take months or years. That guidance was published in the storm’s immediate aftermath; it is not a current directory of active campaigns or available services. (Associated Press guidance.)
