What the DOJ alleges
The Justice Department’s Antitrust Division and attorneys general from 17 states sued Cal-Maine Foods Inc., Hickman’s Egg Ranch Inc., and three Versova-related entities: Centrum Valley Holdings LLC, Versova Holdings LLC, and Versova Management Cooperative. DOJ alleges that the producers coordinated activity affecting daily egg-price quotations published by Urner Barry Publications, a market reporting company. The department says those quotations influence the wholesale prices paid by grocery stores, restaurants, and other businesses nationwide. DOJ’s June 30, 2026 announcement
The coalition’s investigation concerned alleged secret communications and coordinated bidding from approximately June 2022 to March 2025, according to the Arizona Attorney General’s Office. DOJ’s complaint describes alleged tactics including multiple defendants placing bids to signal broad demand, bids concentrated in the hours before quotations were published, bids that were unlikely to result in trades, and some trades at premium prices. Those are allegations in the complaint, not established facts.
How a wholesale quotation could affect consumers
Urner Barry’s daily quotations are wholesale benchmarks, not the price printed on a grocery-store shelf. DOJ says businesses use the quotations in setting prices they pay for eggs. The alleged route to consumer prices is therefore indirect: if the benchmark influenced wholesale transactions, changes in it could affect costs for retailers and other buyers, which may in turn influence what consumers pay. The case does not establish that every retailer changed prices, or by how much.

DOJ says billions of eggs are sold each year at prices based on Urner Barry quotations. That is the department’s characterization in its announcement; the announcement does not provide a separate underlying dataset. No current retail-price figure or comparable year-over-year series is established by the cited materials, so the case should not be read as a measurement of today’s grocery-store egg prices.
What DOJ says happened after the investigation became known
DOJ says egg-price quotations fell significantly from their peak after defendants learned of the investigation and received instructions to preserve documents in March 2025. This is the department’s chronology. It does not, by itself, prove that the investigation caused the decline or establish what other factors affected prices.

What the proposed settlements would require
DOJ announced the civil lawsuit and proposed settlements at the same time. The department says the proposals would require antitrust compliance programs, designated compliance officers, monitoring of meetings involving cooperatives and joint ventures, and reporting of potential violations. DOJ says the proposals will be published under the Tunney Act, under which the court considers whether the proposed judgments are in the public interest. The announcement does not establish that final judgments have been entered.

These figures should not be treated as competing estimates of a single company’s contribution: the Arizona release describes coalition-wide relief, while Cal-Maine’s filing describes that company’s commitments. In its 2026 SEC filing, Cal-Maine said it denied wrongdoing and had entered an agreement with DOJ and 17 state attorneys general on or about June 25, 2026, subject to court approvals and procedures. The company also reported that Washington did not join that settlement and continued its subpoena-based investigation. The filing establishes Cal-Maine’s account of its position and the inquiry at that time; it does not establish the outcome of Washington’s investigation.
