In the U.S., dog vaccinations can cost roughly $10 to $66.50 per vaccine at posted clinics, before or after additional exam and service fees. A low-cost clinic may charge $55–$110 for a vaccine package, while a regular veterinary visit can cost more once the examination, testing, and required boosters are included. These are posted examples, not guaranteed national rates.
The amount you pay depends on your dog’s age, vaccination history, location, clinic, and exposure risk. Puppies usually cost more in their first year because they need a series of combination vaccines rather than one shot.
Average dog vaccination cost
There is no official nationwide price list for dog vaccines. Veterinary practices set their own prices, and the advertised vaccine price may not include an examination or other charges.
Forbes Advisor reports a useful national benchmark of about $176 for a group of recommended vaccines, including Bordetella, DAPP, bivalent influenza, leptospirosis, and Lyme disease. That figure is not a universal bill: it includes vaccines that may not be appropriate for every dog and may not include a separate examination fee.

How much do puppy vaccinations cost?
Puppies generally have the highest first-year vaccination costs because their core combination vaccine must be administered in a series. The 2024-updated AAHA guidance recommends at least three doses covering distemper, adenovirus, and parvovirus, with or without parainfluenza, between 6 and 16 weeks of age. The doses are spaced two to four weeks apart.
Leptospirosis requires two doses, also two to four weeks apart, beginning at 12 weeks. Rabies timing depends on the vaccine label and state or local law; most dogs should not receive their first rabies vaccine before 12 weeks.
That means a puppy’s first-year bill can include several appointments, examination fees, multiple combination vaccines, leptospirosis, rabies, and optional lifestyle vaccines. Fulton County Animal Center lists puppy or young-dog packages from $55 to $85; the 2025 Los Angeles low-cost clinic listed a $70 puppy package. These are clinic-specific examples, not a national average.

Adult dog vaccination costs
An adult dog that is current on vaccines may need only the vaccines due during that year’s preventive-care visit. The total is often lower than the first-year puppy series, but it can still increase if the visit includes an examination, rabies, DHPP or DAPP, leptospirosis, Bordetella, canine influenza, Lyme vaccination, or disease testing.
AAHA recommends a combination-vaccine booster within one year after the initial series, followed by combination-vaccine boosters at three-year intervals. Leptospirosis is given annually after the initial two-dose series. Many lifestyle vaccines are also administered annually, depending on the product and the dog’s risk. See AAHA’s vaccine recommendations.
Which vaccines does your dog actually need?
Vaccines should be selected with a veterinarian rather than by choosing the cheapest package. AAHA’s 2024 guidance identifies distemper, adenovirus, parvovirus, leptospira, and rabies as core vaccines for dogs, unless a veterinarian identifies a medical reason not to vaccinate. Parainfluenza may be included in the combination vaccine.
AAHA classifies Bordetella, Lyme disease, canine influenza, and rattlesnake toxoid as lifestyle- or risk-based vaccines. They may be appropriate if your dog:

Bordetella is not automatically necessary for every dog, although a boarding, daycare, or grooming facility may require it. Leptospirosis should not be dismissed as merely optional under AAHA’s updated U.S. guidance, which now recommends it as a core vaccine for all dogs. Veterinary protocols can differ by region and individual medical circumstances.
Rabies vaccination: cost and legal requirements
Rabies is different from most other dog vaccines because its administration and timing are regulated. The vaccine should be given by a veterinarian or under veterinary supervision consistent with local law.
A three-year rabies vaccine is not automatically available when a dog is receiving its first rabies vaccination. Some clinics require proof of a valid previous rabies vaccination before using the three-year product. State, county, and city requirements also vary. Even a state without a statewide requirement may have local rules; consult Rabies Aware for state information.
Bring your dog’s previous vaccination records. They can help the clinic avoid unnecessary repeat doses and may be needed to issue a three-year rabies certificate. See the CDC’s rabies guidance for veterinarians.

Fees that can make the bill higher
The vaccine price on a clinic’s website may not be the total price you pay. Before booking, ask whether the quote includes:
- A physical examination
- A technician, vaccine-clinic, or facility fee
- Medical-record or rabies-certificate charges
- A rabies tag
- Disposal fees
- Heartworm or tick-borne disease testing
- Deworming
- Microchipping
- A required booster or follow-up visit
- A separate examination for each appointment
For example, Fulton County Animal Center lists a $25 examination fee for à-la-carte services, while its packages combine the examination with selected vaccines and tests. A package can therefore be cheaper than adding the same services individually—but only if your dog needs everything included.
How to lower your dog’s vaccination bill
- Compare complete visit prices. Add the examination fee, testing, certificates, and tags to the vaccine prices before comparing clinics.
- Check nonprofit and municipal clinics. Animal shelters, humane societies, and nonprofit vaccine clinics often publish lower prices than full-service veterinary practices.
- Ask about puppy-series packages. A package may reduce the cost of repeated puppy appointments, but confirm exactly which doses and examinations are included.
- Bring prior records. Documentation may prevent unnecessary revaccination and may qualify your dog for a three-year rabies vaccine.
- Request a written estimate. Ask the clinic to separate vaccines, examinations, testing, and administrative charges.
- Do not skip a vaccine solely to save money. The least expensive plan is not necessarily the appropriate plan if your dog boards, hikes, attends daycare, or faces other disease exposure.
Pet insurance typically does not cover routine vaccinations unless you purchase preventive-care or wellness coverage. Wellness plans may reimburse vaccines, but they commonly have annual or per-service limits. Compare the plan’s premium and reimbursement limits with what you realistically expect to spend; see Forbes Advisor’s wellness-plan analysis.

Are puppy vaccinations more expensive than adult dog vaccinations?
Usually. Puppies need at least three combination-vaccine doses between 6 and 16 weeks, plus rabies and two leptospirosis doses beginning at 12 weeks. Several appointments and examination fees can make the first year more expensive.
How often does a dog need vaccines?
It depends on the vaccine. After the initial series and a one-year booster, AAHA recommends combination-vaccine boosters at three-year intervals. Leptospirosis and many lifestyle vaccines are generally given annually, while rabies follows the product label and local law.
Does pet insurance cover dog vaccines?
Standard pet insurance generally does not cover routine vaccinations. A preventive-care or wellness add-on may reimburse some vaccine costs, subject to the plan’s premiums, annual limits, and per-service limits.
The Bottom Line
Plan on more than the sticker price of a shot. A dog vaccine may cost $10–$66.50 at posted clinics, but the full visit depends on examinations, required boosters, testing, records, and local rules. Puppies usually cost the most in year one because they need a multi-dose series. Compare total package and à-la-carte prices, bring vaccination records, and choose lifestyle vaccines based on your dog’s actual exposure risk.
