Generally, no. Walgreens’ gift cards cannot be redeemed for cash unless applicable law requires it. A small-balance cash redemption may depend on the law where the card is used, so check the current rule for your state or territory rather than assuming Walgreens will pay out the balance.
What Walgreens’ gift-card terms allow
Walgreens’ Gift Card Terms & Conditions say a card cannot be “redeemed for cash unless required by law.” The terms also state: “Except as required by law, Gift Cards are non-refundable and cannot be returned or redeemed for cash.” That means an ordinary return or exchange for cash is not part of the standard policy.

The terms describe eligible use at participating Walgreens or Duane Reade locations in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and online at Walgreens.com. They also exclude using a Walgreens gift card to buy other gift cards and certain prepaid or financial products.
When a small balance might be payable in cash
The legal exception leaves room for cash redemption when applicable law requires it. Whether a very small remaining balance qualifies depends on the jurisdiction and the conditions in its current law. Walgreens’ general terms do not establish a universal minimum balance or a single nationwide cash-out rule.

Walgreens has a page listing example state thresholds, but its current status and update date have not been established. Do not rely on that page as a current state-by-state guide. Check an authoritative, up-to-date source for the law that applies to the cardholder and confirm Walgreens’ process before expecting payment.
State-required cash redemption is different from abandoned-property or escheat rules, which concern when unused value may have to be remitted to a state. Those rules do not create an ordinary in-store cash-exchange service.

How to check the balance and ask Walgreens
- Have the card available and check its remaining balance using a participating store, the purchase receipt, Walgreens’ gift-card help page, or the balance-check options listed in the card terms.
- If the balance is very small, check the current cash-redemption rule for the relevant state or territory, including the threshold and any eligibility conditions.
- Contact Walgreens using the customer-care number printed on the back of the card. Ask whether the applicable law requires cash redemption and what steps the issuer requires.
What to do if Walgreens will not cash it out
If local law does not require a cash payment, use the card toward eligible Walgreens purchases. The terms prohibit reselling Walgreens gift cards to third parties for cash or other consideration, so a marketplace sale is not a suitable workaround. A card with a balance that cannot be cashed out is still usable for eligible purchases, subject to the card terms.
