Re:

Does Valve Really Make Nearly $50 Million per Employee? What the $17 Billion Estimate Means

The $48.6 million-per-employee headline is derived from estimated Steam sales and an older approximate headcount—not a verified Valve financial result.

Not as a verified company figure. The nearly $50 million-per-employee headline comes from dividing a reported projection of about $17 billion in Steam sales for 2025 by an older, approximate Valve headcount of around 350. That calculation is roughly $48.6 million per person, but it is not audited Valve revenue per employee, profit per employee, or employee pay.

Where the nearly $50 million figure comes from

Tom’s Hardware reported Alinea Analytics’ estimate that Steam generated $16.2 billion in sales during 2025 and also described a projection that annual Steam sales could reach about $17 billion. The $48.6 million figure is simple arithmetic: $17 billion divided by 350. It is a derived ratio, not a statistic separately disclosed by Valve. Tom’s Hardware’s report attributes the sales estimate to Alinea Analytics.

Each input needs a qualification. The $17 billion is an estimate or projection about Steam sales, while the workforce figure is an approximate historical estimate cited in reporting—not a confirmed current headcount. Combining them produces an attention-grabbing comparison, but not a like-for-like measure of Valve’s business in 2025.

Steam sales are not the same as Valve revenue

Steam is a marketplace where customers buy games and other products from third-party developers as well as Valve. The total value of purchases made through the platform is therefore not automatically the amount Valve keeps as revenue. PC Gamer’s coverage distinguishes estimated Steam sales from Valve’s own take and notes that the calculation method was not published in the article. PC Gamer’s report discusses that distinction.

Valve is privately held, and the reporting says it is not required to publish operational data like a public company. The sources do not establish Valve’s audited 2025 corporate revenue, audited Steam gross sales, or the detailed method behind Alinea Analytics’ estimate. Treat the figures as third-party estimates, not filed financial results.

Why the employee count is a weak denominator

The roughly 350-person figure is an approximate historical estimate cited in 2025 reporting, drawing on older staffing information, including an estimate attributed to 2018 and an average over 2012–2021. It does not establish how many people Valve employed in 2025. The sources also do not specify a current count or explain whether any reported workforce figure includes contractors.

A ratio that pairs a 2025 sales estimate with a workforce number from older reporting should not be presented as a current operating metric. Even if both inputs were accurate on their own terms, their differing dates and definitions would still limit what the quotient can tell you.

What the number does—and does not—measure

Figure What it represents What it does not establish
About $17 billion A reported projection for Steam sales in 2025, attributed to third-party analysis Audited Valve corporate revenue or profit
Around 350 employees An approximate historical headcount cited in later reporting Valve’s verified current or 2025 workforce
About $48.6 million per employee $17 billion divided by 350 Audited revenue per worker, profit per worker, productivity, or compensation

“Makes per employee” can blur several different concepts. Gross marketplace sales, company revenue, profit, and what employees are paid are not interchangeable. The arithmetic only describes the two estimates used in the calculation; it cannot answer how much Valve earns from each employee or how much an employee receives.

Why comparisons with Google, Amazon, and Microsoft are not settled by this calculation

Public-company comparisons require the same financial measure, period, and workforce basis. Alphabet’s 2025 annual report, filed with the SEC, reports $402.836 billion in consolidated revenue for the year ended December 31, 2025 and 190,820 employees at year end. Alphabet’s SEC filing is a primary source for those company figures, but consolidated revenue is not equivalent to estimated gross Steam sales.

Amazon’s 2025 annual report reports approximately 1,576,000 employees as of December 31, 2025. Amazon’s SEC filing supports that employee count; the cited passage does not provide a matching revenue figure for a comparable calculation. The available evidence likewise does not establish a consistent set of figures for Valve, Google, Amazon, and Microsoft that would support a reliable ranking of revenue per employee.

Even a calculation using public filings needs care: year-end employee counts differ from average staffing, and financial measures may refer to company revenue, net revenue, or profit. Here, Valve’s numerator is estimated platform sales and its denominator is an older approximate headcount, so setting the ratio beside public-company revenue-per-employee figures would imply a comparability the evidence does not support.

What can be said about Valve’s own view

Tom’s Hardware reproduces a sentence from Valve’s Handbook for New Employees: “Our profitability per employee is higher than that of Google or Amazon or Microsoft, and we believe strongly that the right thing to do in that case is to put a maximum amount of money back into each employee’s pocket.” This is historical company language reproduced by the outlet, not confirmation of the current $17 billion estimate or the 350-person headcount. Tom’s Hardware reproduces the statement.

The statement refers to profitability per employee, while the headline’s $48.6 million calculation divides estimated Steam sales by an approximate headcount. Those are different measures. The quoted handbook language does not validate the headline’s arithmetic as a measure of Valve’s profit or employee compensation.

The accurate takeaway

A third-party estimate put Steam’s 2025 sales at $16.2 billion, with a reported projection of about $17 billion. Dividing the projected sales figure by an older workforce estimate near 350 yields roughly $48.6 million per person. It is a headline calculation based on estimates with different dates and definitions—not a verified figure for Valve revenue or profit per employee, and not evidence of what employees are paid.
