Possibly—but the widely cited 20–40 million metric ton figure is an estimate for lithium across the McDermitt Caldera, not a formally reported reserve or a demonstrated mineable supply. The Oregon–Nevada region also contains two separately reported deposits with measured and indicated resources. Those figures are more formally classified, but neither classification proves that all the lithium can be extracted profitably.
Where is the lithium, and what kind of deposit is it?
The McDermitt Caldera straddles the Oregon–Nevada border. Its lithium occurs in clay-bearing lake sediments formed within a volcanic caldera, rather than in a conventional hard-rock orebody. The two principal named deposits are Thacker Pass in Nevada and McDermitt in Oregon. A 2026 paper describes them as the only CRIRSCO-compliant documented resources in the caldera at the time it was published.
The lithium was first identified in the late 1970s during uranium exploration by Chevron and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Extensive lithium exploration in the caldera began in 2007, and the McDermitt deposit was discovered in 2018, according to the same paper.
What does “world’s largest” mean here?
The headline-sized claim comes from an estimate of roughly 20–40 million metric tons of lithium in the caldera’s lake sediments. The 2026 paper attributes this estimate to Castor and Henry (2020) and describes it as non-code-compliant. It is a caldera-wide estimate, not a formal mineral resource reported under a recognized classification code, and not a reserve estimate.

That distinction matters. A broad estimate of geological inventory cannot be treated as a proven quantity available for mining. It does not establish how much could be recovered, at what cost, or whether extraction would be economically viable. Nor does a large geological estimate alone settle a global ranking: comparable deposits must be assessed on consistent definitions and reporting standards.
How does the caldera estimate compare with reported deposit resources?
The figures below cover different geographic scopes and classifications. The deposit-level numbers are measured and indicated resources reported in 2024 and summarized by the 2026 paper; the caldera-wide number is an approximate, non-code-compliant estimate. They should not be added together or treated as directly comparable totals.

These quantities are stated as lithium metal, not lithium carbonate equivalent. Resource classifications provide a more structured basis for describing deposits, but they do not guarantee a mine will be built or that the full resource can be produced.
How might lithium have accumulated there?
A USGS-authored 2023 study describes the caldera as a 16.4-million-year-old volcanic center formed during early Yellowstone hotspot activity. Its proposed model is that lithium-rich fluids from magma entered a closed lake inside the caldera. Evaporation concentrated the lithium, which was then captured in clay minerals.

The study’s modeling suggests that 100 cubic kilometers of resurgent magma could yield 25–150 million metric tons of lithium in magmatic fluid. That is a modeled source potential, not a measurement of lithium contained in a deposit or a forecast of recoverable supply. The distinction is similar to the difference between a plausible geological source and a classified resource supported by deposit-specific reporting.

On January 27, 2023, the USGS announced that it and the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology were investing about $300,000 in detailed mapping in the Thacker Pass area. The planned work included geologic mapping, thin-section petrography, whole-rock and mineral geochemistry, interpretation of geophysical data, and high-precision geochronology. The announcement described how those methods could clarify the region’s geology and the distribution and possible origin of lithium deposits. It documents the effort announced at that time; it does not establish present-day construction, permitting, production schedules, or project economics.

What should a personal-finance reader take from the headline?
A very large geological estimate is not the same thing as a guaranteed future supply, a producing mine, or an investment outcome. For any financial decision tied to lithium or a company developing a deposit, distinguish the deposit’s reported resource category from reserves, production, costs, permits, and project economics. The figures above do not answer those separate questions.
