No—Staples’ current U.S. recycling page does not list a credit for recycling a printer. It lists printer and multifunction-device recycling at $9.99 each, with the fee not applicable in eight states. Staples’ rewards offers are for qualifying ink and toner cartridges, not printers.
What Staples charges to recycle a printer
Staples’ Recycling Services page lists “Printers & multifunction devices ($9.99 each).” It says the fee is not applicable in California, Connecticut, Illinois, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island. The page excerpt does not explain the reason for those exceptions, so confirm the terms with your local store before visiting.
The listed $9.99 is a recycling charge, not a credit or payment to you. Staples’ current page does not state that it pays customers for turning in a printer.
Printer recycling is different from cartridge rewards
Staples lists printers and printer cartridges as separate recycling categories. Its current recycling page advertises 500 Easy Rewards points for each cartridge recycled in store, up to six cartridges and a stated $15 in savings, subject to a limit of 3,000 points per calendar month. That offer applies to cartridges, not printers.

A separate Staples Help Center FAQ says qualifying empty ink and toner cartridges earn $2 in Staples Rewards each, up to 10 per month, if the customer has made at least $30 in Staples ink or toner purchases in the previous 180 days. Those terms differ from the current recycling-page points promotion. Check the live offer and your account terms before relying on either reward amount; neither source lists a printer recycling reward.
Can you trade in a printer instead?
The Staples Help Center describes a trade-in gift card program for selected devices, including laptops, mobile phones, tablets, and e-readers. It does not list printers as eligible examples, so printer eligibility is not established by the published information. Ask Staples about your specific model before assuming it qualifies.

What about the old Staples printer recycling rebate?
A Staples rebate form records a historical 2009 offer: customers who bought a new printer regularly priced at $179 or more and recycled a printer between March 15 and May 2, 2009, could apply for a $50 Visa prepaid card. The form had to be mailed by July 2, 2009. This was a dated promotion, not a current printer-recycling credit. See the 2009 rebate form.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide what to do with an old printer
- Use Staples recycling: Check the current store terms and whether the listed $9.99 fee applies where you live.
- Look for a trade-in: Confirm directly with Staples whether your particular printer model is eligible; the Help Center’s listed device examples do not include printers.
- Recycle cartridges separately: If you also have empty ink or toner cartridges, check the applicable current reward terms. Cartridge incentives do not reduce or replace the printer recycling charge unless Staples says otherwise.
Staples’ recycling prices, exceptions, and rewards may change. The terms described here are those shown on its pages consulted on October 8, 2026; verify the live listing before making a trip.
