The confusion is between flash memory, the storage technology, and the different products that use it.
What does “one memory type” mean?
If “type” means the underlying storage technology, flash memory is a major part of SanDisk’s business. If it means the kind of product you can buy, SanDisk offers multiple forms of storage. Its official portfolio lists memory cards, USB flash drives, SSDs, commercial removable storage and embedded flash, among other categories. SanDisk’s product portfolio includes products for different markets; not every listed category is necessarily a consumer retail product.

SanDisk’s FY2025 Sustainability Report describes flash memory as storage used in devices such as USB drives, smartphones and computer SSDs. It says flash retains files when power is off and has no moving parts. In other words, flash memory is the technology, while a card, thumb drive or SSD is a product form that uses storage technology.
What storage products does SanDisk offer?
- Memory cards: Removable cards for devices that support the relevant card format.
- USB flash drives: Portable storage that connects through a compatible USB port.
- SSDs: Solid-state drives in categories that include gaming, portable or external, internal and data-center products.
- Commercial and embedded storage: SanDisk also lists commercial removable storage, commercial internal SSDs and embedded flash for business or device applications.
The official portfolio groups products by form and market, rather than presenting one universal storage product for every user or device.

Are SD and microSD cards different types?
They are different memory-card formats. SanDisk describes microSD as a smaller version of SD, suited to compact devices such as handheld gaming consoles. A smaller card is not automatically compatible with every device: the device’s supported format and specifications determine what will work. SanDisk explains the formats and card markings in its memory cards and card readers guide.
How to choose a SanDisk memory card
- Check the device’s manual or specifications. Confirm whether it supports SD or microSD and any other format requirements before buying.
- Choose capacity within the device’s supported range. Estimate how much space you need, then verify that the device accepts that capacity.
- Match performance to the task. Review the device’s requirements and the card’s speed or performance markings, especially if you will record or transfer demanding content.
- Check the reader separately if you need one. A card reader must match the card format and connect to a port supported by the host device. SanDisk lists readers and accessories, but a reader is useful only when those connections are compatible.
Bottom line
SanDisk does not make just one kind of storage product. Flash memory is a technology found across several product forms; choose among them based on the device you need to use and the way you plan to store or transfer files.
