Re:

Does Robinhood Own Bitcoin, and Does Its Purchase Affect Customers?

Robinhood says it keeps small operational crypto holdings separate from customer crypto, but does not disclose a Bitcoin-specific company balance. Here’s what that means for your account, trading, and custody.

Robinhood says it holds small amounts of cryptocurrency for business operations, but no significant amount for its own account. Its 2025 annual filing does not give a Bitcoin-specific amount. Robinhood also says it keeps those operational holdings separate from customer crypto. The disclosures reviewed do not establish that a company purchase changed a customer’s account balance or moved Bitcoin’s price.

What Robinhood says it owns

In its 2025 annual filing, Robinhood Markets, Inc. says: “We currently do not hold significant amounts of cryptocurrency for our own account.” It adds that it holds small amounts of crypto “solely to support our business operations” and does not commingle those assets with users’ crypto. The filing also says the company does not seek to profit from proprietary trading and instead facilitates customer transactions. These are Robinhood’s disclosures about its own holdings, not an independently verified on-chain accounting.

The filing does not state how much Bitcoin Robinhood owns, or provide a Bitcoin-specific balance. The company’s total customer crypto held in custody should not be mistaken for crypto owned by Robinhood itself. Its July 30, 2026 quarterly filing discusses custody risks but does not provide a newer quantified company-owned Bitcoin balance.

Are the Bitcoin in your Robinhood account yours?

Robinhood’s disclosures distinguish customer crypto from company operational holdings. Robinhood Crypto, LLC holds customer crypto in custody and keeps records of customer ownership and account balances. The customer has an account-recorded claim to the crypto, but Robinhood controls the private keys for its custodial addresses; customers do not receive those keys while the crypto remains in the hosted account.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

Robinhood Crypto is a separate business from Robinhood Financial LLC, which provides brokerage services for stocks, ETFs, and options. Crypto is not a stock, is not FDIC insured, and Robinhood Crypto is not a SIPC member. Do not assume protections associated with an eligible brokerage account apply to Bitcoin held through Robinhood Crypto.

Could Robinhood’s purchase affect customers?

Your recorded balance and custody

Robinhood says it does not commingle its operational crypto with customer crypto and maintains customer ownership and balance records. The reviewed disclosures do not say that a Robinhood company purchase changes an individual customer’s recorded Bitcoin balance. Separately, Robinhood’s July 30, 2026 filing warns that loss of or unauthorized access to customer private keys could impair customers’ ability to trade or lead to losses.

Bitcoin’s market price

A sufficiently large market purchase can, in principle, add demand and influence a market price. But the available disclosures do not establish that Robinhood made a particular Bitcoin purchase or that one affected Bitcoin’s price. There is no disclosed company-owned Bitcoin figure here from which to infer the size or price impact of a purchase.

Your trade execution

A customer’s execution can be affected by market conditions independently of company holdings. Robinhood says market orders use buffers intended to account for dramatic price moves; limit orders execute only at qualifying prices; and buy or sell estimates can differ because of the bid-ask spread. Price movement, liquidity, order type, scheduled maintenance, and settlement timing can all matter to a transaction.

What custody means for protection and transfers

Robinhood says it stores crypto across cold and hot wallets, with most assets in cold storage. It also describes crime insurance covering a portion of assets across storage systems against theft, including cybersecurity breaches. That is a limited company-stated security measure, not a guarantee that every customer balance is insured or protected against every kind of loss.

Robinhood’s “How you’re protected” page lists $500,000 in total SIPC coverage per account type, including a $250,000 cash limit, for eligible brokerage assets. The same page says crypto positions through Robinhood Crypto are not SIPC protected; those SIPC limits do not cover Bitcoin in a Robinhood Crypto account. Customers can transfer supported crypto to an external wallet. Once crypto is in self-custody, the wallet holder controls the private keys and takes responsibility for safeguarding and recovering them. Robinhood’s July 30, 2026 filing also describes transfer risks, including sending an asset to an incompatible network address. Check supported assets and networks before initiating a transfer.

What to check before deciding where to hold Bitcoin

  • Key control: A Robinhood Crypto account is custodial; an external self-custody wallet puts key control with you.
  • Transfers: Confirm that the asset and network are supported at both ends before sending.
  • Recovery: With self-custody, losing access to the keys or recovery method can mean losing access to the funds.
  • Execution: Compare the quoted price, spread, order type, and any applicable transfer costs rather than assuming the displayed estimate is guaranteed.
  • Protection: Robinhood states that its crypto positions are not SIPC protected; self-custody also shifts security and recovery responsibility to the holder.

These are different custody arrangements, not a universal recommendation to use one over the other. Robinhood’s U.S. customer pages and disclosures cited here describe its own services and terms; features and terms can change.
