There is no verified evidence that Owlcat Games has regained control of Pathfinder: Kingmaker. In a January 29, 2025 Q&A, Owlcat said the rights remained with its publisher after the studio became independent in 2019, and that Owlcat could not control or update the game. That is the latest direct rights statement in the available sources; it does not establish whether anything changed after January 2025. As of October 8, 2026, the claim that Owlcat has regained control remains unverified.
What did Owlcat say about the game’s rights?
Owlcat’s January 29, 2025 Q&A gave the clearest account of the situation. The studio said: “We developed the game while being a part of a larger publishing company, and after we went independent in 2019, the rights remained with the publisher.” It added that it did not receive revenue from the game, had no control over what happened to it, and could not make updates. Owlcat Games’ Q&A does not identify a named speaker for those answers.
Asked whether Owlcat planned to reacquire the Pathfinder: Kingmaker IP, the studio said the chances were “slim at best” at the time. That answer describes Owlcat’s position in January 2025, not necessarily its position today.
Does a change in publisher mean Owlcat regained control?
No. Developer, publisher, and rights holder are distinct roles. Owlcat is identified as the game’s developer, while the rights statement says the rights remained with the publisher after 2019. A company can publish a game without that fact alone establishing who owns or controls its underlying rights.

In January 2025, Game World Observer reported that MY.GAMES subsidiary Knights Peak had announced sales of more than two million copies worldwide. Its report also described publishing changes involving Prime Matter, MY.GAMES, and Knights Peak. Those details document publishing activity, but do not show that rights transferred to Owlcat. Game World Observer’s report says the sales announcement was made January 23, 2025.
What changed when Owlcat became independent?
In 2019, Owlcat announced that it and its parent company, MY.GAMES, had agreed to change their cooperation format so Owlcat could proceed as an independent studio. Owlcat said MY.GAMES would remain its strategic partner and investor. The announcement explains the studio’s transition, but does not itself spell out the game-rights arrangement. Owlcat’s later Q&A provides that detail: it said the rights to Kingmaker stayed with the publisher after the transition. Owlcat’s 2019 announcement

What is known—and what remains unconfirmed?
- Known: Owlcat said in January 2025 that the rights remained with the publisher after its 2019 independence transition, and that Owlcat could not control or update the game at that time.
- Known: Owlcat described reacquisition prospects as “slim at best” in that same Q&A.
- Not established: The cited reporting about later publishers and sales does not demonstrate that Owlcat acquired the rights.
- Unresolved: The available sources contain no later confirmation of a rights transfer. The 2025 statements cannot rule out a change after their publication.
The official Pathfinder: Kingmaker page identifies Owlcat as the game’s creator and provides a purchase route. That supports its developer role, but is not evidence that it currently holds the rights.
