Does Omega’s Spirate System Oust Rolex on Accuracy?

Omega’s Spirate range allows up to two seconds of daily gain and no loss; Rolex’s finished-watch specification allows up to two seconds in either direction. The figures do not establish a head-to-head accuracy winner.

Omega’s Spirate-equipped Speedmaster Super Racing has a published rate range of 0/+2 seconds per day, while Rolex states −2/+2 seconds per day for its finished Superlative Chronometer watches. That makes Omega’s range more restrictive about losing time, but it does not prove a categorical accuracy win: the figures come from different brand specifications, and the cited sources do not establish a shared test protocol or a head-to-head comparison.

What the Spirate System is

Spirate is a fine-regulation mechanism, not a separate watch or a consumer add-on. Omega describes it as a system built around a Si14 silicon balance spring. An eccentric adjustment mechanism at the balance bridge lets a watchmaker alter the stiffness at the spring’s attachment point and make very fine rate adjustments. Swatch Group says the silicon spirals are produced internally from silicon wafers using deep reactive ion etching (DRIE).

The first named implementation is the Omega Speedmaster Super Racing, powered by Co-Axial Master Chronometer calibre 9920. Swatch Group says the mechanism is visible through the watch’s sapphire caseback. Omega’s launch announcement describes the system and its stated precision; Swatch Group’s announcement gives further detail on the mechanism and watch.

How Omega’s and Rolex’s accuracy ranges compare

Specification Omega Spirate Rolex Superlative Chronometer
Published rate range 0/+2 seconds per day, announced by Omega in January 2023 for the Spirate-equipped Speedmaster Super Racing. −2/+2 seconds per day for a finished watch, as stated on Rolex’s precision page accessed in 2026; the page’s publication date is not stated.
What the range allows No daily loss under the stated range; a gain of up to two seconds per day. A loss or a gain of up to two seconds per day.
Test context stated by the brand Omega calls the figure certified precision. The cited launch account does not detail a separate test protocol for the 0/+2 claim. Rolex says its finished-watch precision is assessed after casing under a brand protocol simulating conditions in wear. Rolex separately gives −4/+6 seconds per day for movement-only chronometer testing.

Omega’s stated range is asymmetric: it allows the watch to gain, but not lose, time within the claimed band. Rolex’s finished-watch range allows either direction. Both have a maximum absolute deviation of two seconds per day, so the ranges do not show that Omega is simply “twice as accurate” or categorically more accurate. The distinction is the direction of permitted deviation, not a smaller maximum absolute deviation.

Rolex’s movement-only figure is not the same comparison as its finished-watch specification. Its Superlative Chronometer precision page gives the separate tolerances and describes the brand’s post-casing assessment.

What the certification does—and does not—establish

Omega and Swatch Group describe calibre 9920 in the Super Racing as a METAS-certified Master Chronometer. Swatch Group says the certification process involves eight tests over ten days, with 283 steps overall, and that a red METAS card provides proof. The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry FH also summarized the Spirate launch and the 0/+2 claim in February 2023.

That context does not, by itself, show that METAS independently tested the specific 0/+2 range under a protocol comparable to Rolex’s. Omega’s launch announcement attributes the precision claim to the brand; the cited sources do not provide independent head-to-head measurements or long-term wear results. The safest reading is to treat 0/+2 and −2/+2 as the respective published brand specifications, not as results from one common test.

Does Spirate appear in other Omega watches?

When Swatch Group announced Spirate in 2023, it described introducing the system into other calibres as a step-by-step future plan. That announcement documents an intention, not confirmation of a later rollout. The sources cited here identify the Speedmaster Super Racing as the first Spirate-equipped watch but do not establish deployment across Omega’s current lineup.
