JLS is a leveraged closed-end investment company, not an operating business whose value is ordinarily assessed against operating EBITDA. For the fund, more relevant measures include net asset value (NAV), share-price premium or discount to NAV, distribution sources, leverage, portfolio risk and total return. The available official sources identify JLS as the NYSE ticker but do not explain the “BOATS” prefix or validate an EV/EBITDA figure.
Why forward EV/EBITDA does not fit JLS
EV/EBITDA is generally used to compare operating companies: enterprise value reflects the value of a business’s operations and financing, while EBITDA is an operating earnings measure. JLS is a pooled investment vehicle. Its financial profile is shaped by a portfolio of securities, financing and leverage, expenses, and the relationship between its share price and NAV—not by a conventional operating EBITDA figure.

Nuveen describes the fund’s objective as generating high current income through opportunistic investments in securitized credit. Its fund page says that, under normal circumstances, it invests at least 80% of Assets in mortgage-related and other income-producing securities; it also describes at least 50% of Managed Assets in mortgage-backed securities (MBS), with up to 50% in non-mortgage-related asset-backed securities (ABS). Those are policy descriptions, not a snapshot of current holdings. Nuveen’s JLS fund page
The SEC registration statement classifies JLS as a diversified closed-end management investment company and identifies its common shares as listed on the New York Stock Exchange under JLS. It also describes leverage through borrowings, debt securities, preferred shares, and certain derivatives or other financing instruments. SEC registration statement

What “BOATS:JLS” establishes—and what it does not
The official filing supports JLS as the NYSE common-share ticker. The sources available do not establish what “BOATS” refers to, identify a data vendor using that prefix, or disclose a forward EV/EBITDA formula or value for the fund. A number shown by a financial-data service should not be treated as a standard comparable-company multiple unless the provider, definition and calculation are clear.
What to examine instead when evaluating JLS
For a closed-end fund, use measures that describe both the portfolio and the shares investors buy. Compare funds only using consistent dates, periods and definitions.

- Market price versus NAV: Check whether the shares trade at a premium or discount to the per-share value of the fund’s assets, net of liabilities.
- NAV and market-price total returns: Review both over matching periods. NAV performance reflects the portfolio; market-price performance also reflects changes in the premium or discount.
- Distribution rate and sources: Distinguish the distribution rate from investment performance, and check whether payments are supported by income, realized gains or return of capital.
- Leverage: Consider the amount, sources, cost and exposure of leverage, which can affect risk and the returns experienced by common shareholders.
- Expenses and portfolio risk: Review expense ratios alongside credit composition, asset mix and other relevant portfolio risks.
How to interpret JLS distributions
In its semi-annual report for the period ended June 30, 2026, the fund said common-share distributions are intended to be regular monthly cash distributions, though the Board may change the policy. A distribution may include realized gains or return of capital. The report cautions that if distributions exceed fund returns, NAV per share can erode. A distribution amount by itself therefore does not show whether the fund generated an equivalent investment return. SEC semi-annual shareholder report

How to assess a displayed EV/EBITDA figure
- Confirm that the security is JLS, the NYSE-listed common shares, rather than a similarly labeled instrument.
- Identify the data provider and its definition of “forward EV/EBITDA.” Check what it includes in enterprise value and what forecast or period it uses for EBITDA.
- Check whether the provider’s inputs and formula are designed for an operating company or adapted to a closed-end fund. If the method is not disclosed or does not fit the fund, do not use the figure as a meaningful valuation multiple.
- For fund analysis, compare NAV and market price, distribution sources, leverage, expenses, portfolio exposure and total returns using aligned reporting dates.
