Yes: researchers reported crystalline gold particles emitted by Mount Erebus in Antarctica. But the familiar claim that the volcano produces about 80 grams of gold dust worth thousands of dollars every day is based on a 1991 estimate—not a current daily measurement, a gold-collection operation, or money the volcano earns.
What researchers found at Mount Erebus
A 1991 paper by Kimberly A. Meeker, Ray L. Chuan, Philip R. Kyle, and Julie M. Palais reported crystalline particulate gold in Mount Erebus’s plume near the crater, in near-surface samples, and in ambient air as far as 1,000 km from the volcano. The authors characterized the emitted gold flux as low compared with other volcanoes. Read the paper in Geophysical Research Letters.
The paper also proposed that gold could be transported in vapor form as a chloride species. That is a suggested mechanism, not a settled explanation for every observed particle.
Where the “80 grams a day” figure comes from
The widely repeated daily quantity traces to the 1991 study, not to a new or continuous weighing of Mount Erebus’s output. A 2026 ScienceABC explainer reports that the paper’s text gives 0.06 kg per day while its table gives 0.08 kg per day. Those figures are not identical, so “80 grams every day” should be treated as a historical estimate repeated in later coverage, not a precise current production rate.

The distinction matters: finding particles in samples is direct evidence of gold, while a total daily flux is an estimate. The older figure does not establish how much gold the volcano emits today.
Why “worth thousands” does not mean income
The dollar headline comes from multiplying an estimated mass by a selected gold price. IFLScience used an approximately $6,000-per-day framing in 2024; that was a price-based illustration, not a current 2026 quote or a finding of the 1991 study. Gold prices change, and the historical mass estimate is itself not a freshly measured daily rate.

Most importantly, the study did not describe a commercial collection operation. Gold particles reported in a plume, distant air, and near-surface samples are not the same thing as saleable bullion. The headline figure is therefore neither revenue nor profit, and it does not demonstrate an economically recoverable deposit.
