A Dallas Fed survey published on August 26, 2024, included one food-manufacturing respondent’s report of modest growth in its dinner-sausage category as the economy weakened. The respondent suggested that sausage could replace higher-priced proteins and help consumers stretch food budgets. That is a company-level observation—not evidence that sausage demand rose across the country or that a recession is coming.
Where did the sausage claim come from?
The claim traces to the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas’s August 2024 Texas Manufacturing Outlook Survey, published August 26. In the food-manufacturing comments, an unnamed respondent wrote: “As the economy weakens, we are seeing modest growth in our category of dinner sausage.” The respondent then explained: “This category tends to grow when the economy weakens, as sausage is a good protein substitute for higher-priced proteins and can ‘stretch’ consumers’ food budgets.”
The Dallas Fed says it edited the published comments. The respondent is not identified, and the statement is not an institutional conclusion by the Federal Reserve or a quotation from a named economist. It describes that respondent’s experience with one product category; the survey does not quantify sausage sales or household purchases.
Does it show that people are buying more sausage because meat is expensive?
It offers a plausible affordability explanation, but does not prove that higher prices caused the reported growth. The respondent’s account is that dinner sausage may appeal when consumers seek a lower-cost alternative to pricier proteins. The survey does not report the respondent’s prices, sales volumes, customer behavior, or a comparison with other products.

Nor does this single comment establish that consumers generally are buying more sausage. The survey collected responses from Texas manufacturers, not a representative sample of U.S. households or retailers. It covers a manufacturer’s dinner-sausage category, not every kind of sausage or meat.
What do the August 2024 manufacturing figures add?
The survey provides regional manufacturing context, but its indexes are not sales or spending statistics. The Dallas Fed received responses from 83 of 125 Texas manufacturers surveyed. In August 2024, the production index was 1.6 and the general business activity index was -9.7.

The Dallas Fed calculates each index by subtracting the share of respondents reporting a decrease from the share reporting an increase. A positive or negative reading indicates the balance of responses, not the size of a measured change in output. The survey described little growth in Texas factory activity overall; its figures do not measure sausage demand, household food budgets, or national economic conditions.

The respondent framed the category’s modest growth as something that can happen when the economy weakens, but the comment is neither a forecast nor a recession indicator. The Dallas Fed survey reported mixed manufacturing conditions in Texas; it did not declare that the U.S. economy was in recession or about to enter one.

The date matters, too: these comments describe a survey published in August 2024. They cannot establish current sausage demand, current food prices, or consumer sentiment in 2026. A broader claim would require current, representative sales or household-spending data—not one manufacturer’s survey comment.
