GEICO has not publicly said it refuses to insure every Cybertruck. A report published October 7, 2024 described one owner’s 2024 Cybertruck nonrenewal, while a GEICO spokesperson told Sherwood News the same day that “GEICO has coverage available nationwide for the Tesla Cybertruck.” That general availability does not guarantee an individual quote or renewal: eligibility depends on the applicant, vehicle, state and requested policy.
What happened to the Cybertruck owner with GEICO?
Notebookcheck reported on October 7, 2024, that Cybertruck owner Robert Stevenson shared a notice for his 2024 vehicle saying it did not meet GEICO’s underwriting guidelines. Notebookcheck reproduced the notice as stating: “We are unable to insure your 2024 TESLA CYBERTRUCK because this type of vehicle doesn’t meet our underwriting guidelines.” The report said Stevenson had eight vehicles on his policy and intended to cancel GEICO coverage for all of them while seeking coverage for the Cybertruck. Notebookcheck’s October 7, 2024 report cited the owner’s Reddit and Cybertruck Owners Club posts; the full notice was not independently verified for this account.
The report describes a nonrenewal, rather than establishing that GEICO cancelled coverage mid-policy. It does not establish the notice’s effective date or prove a company-wide ban. A single vehicle-specific underwriting decision can coexist with an insurer offering coverage to other Cybertruck owners.
Does GEICO insure Cybertrucks?
In an October 7, 2024 report, Sherwood News quoted a GEICO spokesperson saying, “GEICO has coverage available nationwide for the Tesla Cybertruck.” Autobody News also reported GEICO’s confirmation that its private passenger and commercial divisions offered policies. These statements establish that GEICO said coverage was available, not that every Cybertruck, driver or use would qualify. Sherwood News and Autobody News reported the response.

GEICO’s public Tesla insurance page, whose vehicle information it says is accurate as of January 2026, lists Model 3, Model S, Model X and Model Y—but not Cybertruck. The page offers a quote flow and cautions that eligibility and coverage vary by state and individual circumstances. Its omission of Cybertruck from the displayed list is not proof that GEICO will refuse a quote; equally, the spokesperson’s nationwide-availability statement is not a current, applicant-specific approval. Why might GEICO decline a particular Cybertruck?
The notice as quoted in Notebookcheck gives one explanation: the vehicle did not meet GEICO’s underwriting guidelines. It does not identify the particular guideline or explain what about the vehicle led to the decision. Neither the report nor GEICO’s quoted public statement establishes a more specific reason, so claims about repair costs, vehicle design, risk, or a broader policy would be speculation.

Underwriting decisions are individual. An insurer’s general willingness to write a vehicle does not promise a quote, renewal, particular price, or requested coverage for every driver and vehicle. GEICO says rates can vary with driver, vehicle, location, coverage and deductible, and that eligibility varies by state and policy. Its internal aggregated cost estimates for January–February 2026 are not quotes and do not establish a Cybertruck-specific rate. GEICO’s page explains these qualifications.
What to do if GEICO says your Cybertruck does not qualify
- Check the notice and dates. Confirm whether GEICO is declining to renew at the end of the policy term or ending coverage during the term, and note the effective date and any response instructions. Do not assume the 2024 report’s circumstances apply to your notice.
- Ask GEICO for a direct answer. Contact the insurer with your state, VIN, drivers, vehicle use and requested coverages. Ask whether the decision is a quote refusal, a renewal decision or something else; whether additional information or a different policy type would change the outcome; and the date any existing coverage ends.
- Get replacement coverage confirmed before the old policy ends. Do not drive on the assumption that a quote request or general statement of availability means you are insured. Confirm the new policy’s effective date and terms in writing to avoid a gap.
- Compare complete, like-for-like quotes. Give each insurer the same driver, vehicle and use information, then compare the written terms rather than just the premium or insurer name.
Where can you get Cybertruck insurance?
Start with direct quote checks from insurers that serve your state, including GEICO and, where available, Tesla Insurance. Tesla says its insurance availability and policy details depend on location and policy; it is not available to every driver in every state. Verify current eligibility and terms directly. Compare quotes using the same details and check each of these points before choosing:
- Whether the insurer accepts the Cybertruck and your drivers in your state, and whether the quote is final or subject to underwriting or inspection.
- Liability limits, collision and comprehensive coverage limits, and deductibles.
- Exclusions, permitted vehicle uses and any restrictions tied to the policy.
- Total premium, payment schedule and other stated payment terms.
- How claims are reported and handled.
For California consumers considering Tesla-related insurers, there is also a separate regulatory issue to understand. On October 3, 2025, the California Department of Insurance announced enforcement actions against Tesla Insurance Services, Tesla Insurance Company and State National Insurance Company, alleging repeated claims-handling failures, including delayed responses or payments and inadequate investigations. The department said the companies could face penalties of up to $5,000 per unlawful, unfair or deceptive act, or $10,000 for an act determined to be willful, and had 15 days to respond. These were allegations and a procedural announcement, not final findings; they do not explain GEICO’s 2024 decision or establish whether any Cybertruck quote is available.
