The clearest consumer measure is a survey of Australians’ stated purchase intentions; Tesla’s delivery figures and financial reports tell a different part of the story.
What the latest Tesla delivery figures show
Tesla reported 486,532 vehicle deliveries worldwide in the third quarter of 2026, according to its October 2 release. That was up from 384,122 in the third quarter of 2025—about 26.7% by calculation from the company’s reported totals. Tesla reported 478,237 deliveries in a combined Model 3/Y line and 8,295 for other models; it did not break out Model 3 and Model Y separately.
Those are global deliveries, not a direct measure of revenue, registrations in a particular country, or how many potential buyers rejected Tesla because of Musk. Tesla cautions that deliveries are only one measure of performance and should not be treated by themselves as an indicator of quarterly financial results.
Does Elon Musk affect whether people consider buying a Tesla?
The most direct evidence in the available material is the Australian Automotive Dealer Association’s November 2025 survey of 2,000 Australians. Asked, “DOES YOUR OPINION OF ELON MUSK IMPACT YOUR WILLINGNESS TO BUY OR LEASE A TESLA IN FUTURE?”, 38% said they were less likely to consider one, 11% said more likely, and 50% reported no impact. The shares are rounded; the difference between the negative and positive responses is 27 percentage points. The comparable net gap was 21 points in the November 2024 survey.

This supports a limited but meaningful conclusion: Musk’s image weighs against Tesla consideration for a substantial share of respondents in that Australian sample. It does not count lost sales. Respondents were reporting stated willingness, not completed purchases; the survey does not establish how many were actively shopping, what vehicle they ultimately chose, or how much the attitude changed Tesla’s transactions. Nor should an Australian result be generalized to buyers in the United States, Europe, China, or every other market.
Why the sales story cannot be reduced to Musk
Price, financing, and vehicle mix affect revenue
Tesla’s 2024 Form 10-K reported that automotive sales revenue fell by $6.03 billion, or 8%, compared with 2023. The company attributed the decline primarily to lower average selling prices following price reductions and attractive financing, changes in product mix, and approximately 22,000 fewer combined Model 3/Y cash deliveries. A revenue decline is not the same as a decline in vehicle units: price, financing arrangements, and the mix of vehicles sold can change revenue even when delivery patterns differ.

Demand conditions and policy differ by place and time
In its July 2, 2026 account of Tesla’s second-quarter rebound, the Associated Press described several factors that could influence demand: lower-priced Model 3 and Model Y versions introduced the prior year, lower financing and leasing costs in Europe, higher fuel prices prompting more EV buying in Europe, consumer backlash associated with Musk, and the end of the US EV tax credit. These are concurrent possible influences, not a quantified allocation of cause.
The same AP report said Tesla’s global second-quarter deliveries rose 25% year over year, from 384,122 in Q2 2025 to 480,126 in Q2 2026. It also reported that Cox Automotive estimated US Tesla sales were still down 20% year over year in Q2 2026. The global company delivery total and a US market estimate can move differently because they cover different geographies and measures.

What other EV data can—and cannot—tell Tesla shoppers
JD Power reported in February 2026 that 96% of new battery-electric-vehicle owners would consider purchasing or leasing another BEV. That is evidence of openness to buying or leasing another electric vehicle among current owners, not a Tesla-specific measure and not proof that those owners will choose Tesla.
JD Power’s EV practice executive director, Brent Gruber, said that EV market share had declined sharply following the discontinuation of the federal tax credit program in September 2025, while satisfaction among new EV owners was growing. He also cited improvements in battery technology, charging infrastructure, and vehicle performance. Those observations provide broader market context; they do not identify Musk’s effect on Tesla sales.

What can be concluded about Musk and Tesla sales?
The evidence supports saying that Musk’s reputation is a negative consideration for many surveyed Australians, but it does not prove that his behavior caused a particular share of Tesla’s sales changes. Tesla’s reported deliveries have risen in recent quarters after earlier annual declines, while company revenue explanations and market reporting point to prices, financing, product mix, policy, fuel costs, and regional demand as relevant factors. A delivery rebound does not establish that reputational backlash has ended; earlier weakness does not establish that Musk alone caused it.
A 2025 National Bureau of Economic Research working paper, “The Musk Partisan Effect on Tesla Sales,” examines US monthly county-level new-vehicle registrations in relation to counties’ Democratic and Republican voting shares. Its title and research design make it relevant to the question, but the available information does not establish the paper’s numerical result, direction, statistical significance, or causal estimate. It should not be cited as proof of a specific Musk-driven sales effect without those findings.
