Elon Musk said during his May 2021 Saturday Night Live opening monologue that he has Asperger’s. That is Musk’s own public statement; the cited reporting does not independently verify a clinical diagnosis. Biographical reporting also says he was bullied as a child, while his later career included ventures such as Zip2, X.com and PayPal, SpaceX and Tesla. The available evidence does not show that autism caused his business outcomes.
Did Elon Musk say he has Asperger’s?
Yes. In his May 2021 Saturday Night Live monologue, Musk joked, “I’m the first person with Asperger’s to host SNL,” then added, “Or at least the first to admit it.” CBS News reported the remarks on May 10, 2021.
The distinction matters: this establishes what Musk said publicly, not an independently confirmed medical record. The same CBS report explains that the American Psychiatric Association announced in 2012 that Asperger’s and similar diagnoses would be grouped under autism spectrum disorder. The terminology change provides context for his wording; it does not independently confirm his diagnosis.
Was Elon Musk bullied as a child?
Biography.com’s account describes Musk as introverted and bookish and says he was bullied until age 15. It also reports that he was born in Pretoria, South Africa, and developed an early interest in computers, creating the game Blastar at age 12. The account does not provide a detailed first-person chronology of particular bullying incidents.
#1 Best Overall
Bullying is a reported part of his childhood, not evidence of autism. It should not be treated as a diagnostic clue or as a universal feature of autistic people’s lives.
What has Musk said about how he communicates?
In a live conversation with Chris Anderson on April 14, 2022, Musk described having tended to take words literally and later learning that people do not always mean exactly what they say. TED’s event page records the conversation; Biography.com also quotes the explanation. This is Musk’s account of his own experience, not a basis for generalizing about autistic people.

How did Musk’s career move from early ventures to major companies?
Biography.com traces Musk’s company-building from Zip2 in 1995 to X.com, which merged with another company and was later renamed PayPal. SpaceX came later, and Musk is also associated with Tesla. This is a career chronology, not evidence that autism produced the companies’ outcomes.
The distinction is important when considering a high-profile founder: a person’s public account of a diagnosis and communication style can be reported alongside their business history, but neither that history nor reported childhood experiences establish why a company succeeded or failed.
