Not exactly. In February 2025, EA CEO Andrew Wilson said games hoping to reach beyond their core audience need to pair high-quality narratives with shared-world features and deeper engagement. The phrase “live-service hybrid” was GamesBeat’s description of his argument—not a direct quote, and not an announced rule that every single-player game must become a live service.
What Andrew Wilson said about single-player games
GamesBeat reported that Wilson made the remarks during EA’s Q3 results call, in a discussion that included Dragon Age: The Veilguard. The report quoted him saying: “In order to break out beyond the core audience, games need to directly connect to the evolving demands of players who increasingly seek shared-world features and deeper engagement alongside high-quality narratives in this beloved category.”
Wilson also said that The Veilguard had not resonated with a broad enough audience. Those are two related points in the report, but they do not establish that a lack of live-service features caused the game’s reception or commercial outcome. The February 2025 call quote is reported by GamesBeat; it was not independently checked against an original call transcript.
Does EA want every story game to become a live service?
EA’s public strategy points to a broader portfolio, not a single mandatory format. At its September 2024 Investor Day, the company identified both engaging massive online communities and creating blockbuster interactive storytelling as strategic pillars. A third pillar focused on using community to grow in, around, and beyond games. The company’s announcement presents these as complementary priorities, not a declaration that every narrative game should be converted into an ongoing online service.

That distinction matters: a game can include optional social or community features while remaining primarily a bounded, story-led experience. A live-service design, by contrast, makes continued engagement and an evolving shared space central to the product. Wilson’s reported remarks advocate combining narrative quality with forms of connection and engagement when seeking broader reach; they do not specify one required design or monetization model.
Why community and ongoing engagement matter to EA
In a March 6, 2024 fireside chat, Wilson described “play, create, watch, connect” as central to the expansion he saw in the industry. He also said that, in EA’s business, most of its community buys upfront and the company receives “on average another $50 or $60 in live service revenue off the back of that initial purchase.” That figure is Wilson’s description of EA’s business, not an independently measured industry average or a claim about every EA game.

It helps explain EA’s commercial interest in keeping communities engaged after launch. But revenue strategy and player preference are separate questions. The cited statements do not establish that players generally want live-service features added to single-player games, nor do they show that such features guarantee a larger audience.
What the argument does—and does not—show
- It shows EA’s stated direction: the company values both online communities and major interactive stories.
- It shows Wilson’s view of audience reach: he argued that shared-world features and deeper engagement alongside strong narratives can help games reach beyond a core audience.
- It does not prove a universal player preference: the cited material is executive commentary and company strategy, not a survey establishing what players broadly want.
- It does not establish causation for The Veilguard: the reported remarks do not demonstrate that its audience reception resulted from being insufficiently live-service or insufficiently hybrid.
EA’s later corporate framing is consistent with an emphasis on connection, but it is a separate statement from the February 2025 comments. In an August 4, 2026 update, Wilson described games as spaces for friendship, competition, expression, and creation as EA began its next chapter as a private company. That context should not be mistaken for a restatement of the earlier call or proof that EA has adopted a universal hybrid mandate.

What this means for players
For players, the practical question is less whether a game contains any online feature and more whether those features support the experience they want. A shared world or ongoing content can add reasons to return and ways to play with others; it can also make continued engagement part of the design. A focused single-player story can remain a deliberate choice rather than a failed version of a live service.
So the most accurate reading is that Wilson sees narrative quality and community-oriented engagement as potentially compatible ways to broaden a game’s reach. EA’s public strategy includes both story-led and community-led products. Neither source establishes that single-player games must adopt live-service systems to succeed.
