Delta won Skytrax’s 2026 award for Best Economy Class Airline in North America, but it did not rank first in every economy-related comparison. Skytrax placed Delta tenth worldwide in economy class, while J.D. Power’s 2026 economy/basic economy satisfaction segment ranked Southwest first and Delta second. The results answer different questions, so neither establishes that Delta is the best choice for every U.S. traveler or itinerary.
What Delta’s 2026 economy award actually says
Skytrax named Delta the Best Economy Class Airline in North America in its 2026 World Airline Awards. In Skytrax’s worldwide economy-class ranking, Delta was number 10. Those are distinct results: the regional award recognizes Delta in a North American category, while the global ranking places it among carriers worldwide. Skytrax’s 2026 economy-class rankings do not amount to a universal finding that Delta beats every U.S. airline on every economy fare or flight.
How Delta compares in other 2026 rankings
Other organizations evaluate different things and reach different results. The most relevant comparisons are not interchangeable: one is a regional class award, one is a satisfaction segment, and others assess airline performance or satisfaction more broadly.
| Ranking | What it measures | 2026 result relevant to Delta |
|---|---|---|
| Skytrax World Airline Awards | Economy-class awards and rankings; the cited award is regional, while the separate ranking is global. | Best Economy Class Airline in North America; 10th worldwide in economy class. Skytrax, 2026 |
| J.D. Power U.S. Airline Satisfaction Study | Economy/basic economy customer satisfaction, measured across seven dimensions: airline staff, digital tools, ease of travel, trust, onboard experience, pre- and post-flight experience, and value for price paid. | Southwest ranked first at 670 points; Delta ranked second at 667 points. J.D. Power, 2026 |
| The Points Guy’s U.S. airline report | An overall airline ranking using a weighted analysis of prior-year data on reliability, customer experience, loyalty programs, and value. | Delta ranked first overall for the eighth consecutive year. This is not an economy-only ranking. The Points Guy, 2026 |
| American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) | Overall airline satisfaction, not an economy-specific ranking. | Delta scored 79 and Southwest scored 77. ACSI, 2026 |
Why the rankings can disagree
An award for the best economy class in North America and a study of economy/basic economy satisfaction are not measuring an identical category or necessarily using the same methodology. J.D. Power’s segment explicitly evaluates satisfaction across seven travel and service dimensions. Skytrax’s cited result is a regional economy-class award, alongside a separate global ranking. A carrier can therefore win one distinction without leading every other comparison.

The broader rankings answer still different questions. The Points Guy’s result combines reliability, customer experience, loyalty, and value, while ACSI reports overall airline satisfaction. Neither one establishes that Delta has the strongest economy cabin specifically. J.D. Power senior managing director Michael Taylor said airlines returned to passenger communication, friendly service, and providing “slightly better value for money compared to past years.” J.D. Power’s 2026 study release does not make that observation a Delta-specific finding.

Use the rankings as broad signals, not a substitute for comparing the actual trip. The results do not establish which airline has the lowest fare, the most comfortable seat on a particular aircraft, or the best option for a particular route. Before booking, compare the total fare and itinerary details for the flights you would actually take.
