Does Delta Air Lines Still Want Blended Winglets? What the Public Record Shows

Delta has not said it no longer wants winglets. Its statements describe winglets added to every existing fleet that can be modified, plus a 737-800 upgrade completed in 2025. Here is what the record shows and what it does not.

Delta has not said it no longer wants winglets. Its public statements describe winglets added to every existing fleet that can be modified, followed by a later upgrade on its 737-800 fleet. What the public record does not show is why a particular aircraft may look different, because Delta has not published aircraft-by-aircraft status or the reasons behind any individual wingtip.

What Delta has actually said, in order

Delta’s winglet story runs through four company statements. Read together, they describe expansion and upgrades, not a retreat from winglets.

Year Source What Delta said How to read it
2007 Delta announcement, with a quote from Chief Operating Officer Jim Whitehurst Winglet retrofits covering more than 60 737-NG, 757-200 and 767-300ER aircraft, installed by Aviation Partners Boeing. Delta expected a minimum 3.5% improvement in fuel consumption and a minimum 5% improvement in range. For the 757-200 it cited 200 nautical miles of added range or up to 49 additional passengers on 4,000-mile routes; for the 767-300ER, more than 350 nautical miles of range or 5.5 tons of payload. Delta’s expectations at announcement, not independently verified results
2010 Delta company release Planned winglet installations on more than 170 767-300ER, 757-200 and 737-800 aircraft, with fuel-efficiency improvement of as much as 5%. A plan and an estimate. It is not a count of aircraft actually modified, and the result is not guaranteed on every aircraft.
2024 Delta corporate recap Target to finish the split-scimitar winglet upgrade on the 737-800 fleet by the end of 2025. A target set in 2024
2025 Delta sustainability report Delta finalized the split-scimitar modifications on the 737-800 fleet during 2025 and said it had added its most advanced winglet technology to all existing fleets that can be modified. A company statement. It does not confirm that every individual aircraft carries a winglet.

The phrase “fleets that can be modified” matters. It implies that some aircraft are not eligible for the upgrade, but Delta’s statements do not say which aircraft those are or why.

What a winglet does

Boeing’s technical explainer describes the basic mechanism. Air flows from the high-pressure underside of a wing toward the low-pressure top at the wingtip, forming vortices. As Boeing puts it, “These vortices cause lift-induced drag, lowering the efficiency of the wing.” A blended winglet at the tip reduces that loss, which is why airlines fit them. This is a general aerodynamic explanation. It does not measure the savings on any specific Delta aircraft or route.

Three different devices people confuse

Readers often lump together wingtip devices and the newer fuselage parts Delta has been testing. They are different components on different parts of the aircraft.

Device Location Design Aircraft Delta names Status Delta describes
Blended winglet Wingtip Upward-curving tip extension, per Boeing’s explainer 737-NG, 757-200 and 767-300ER (2007 announcement); 767-300ER, 757-200 and 737-800 (2010 plan) Added to existing fleets that can be modified; no per-aircraft count published
Split-scimitar winglet Wingtip Upgraded winglet design Delta calls its most advanced available 737-800 Upgrade finalized in 2025 according to Delta’s 2025 report
VCT finlet Aft fuselage Fuselage-mounted finlet 737-800 and 737-900ER; 240 aircraft targeted in Delta’s 2026 announcement Planned. Delta does not say finlets replace winglets.

Two cautions apply. The sources do not provide a like-for-like Delta test comparing these designs, so no ranking of their fuel savings is possible. And the 240-aircraft finlet figure is a separate aft-fuselage program, not a winglet count.

  • Molded in light gray and clear. Paint and glue not included.

Why the “doesn’t want winglets” reading does not hold

The claim that Delta has turned away from winglets runs against what the company has published. Three points stand out:

  • Delta’s most recent winglet statement is an upgrade, not a removal program. It describes adding technology to fleets that can be modified.
  • Delta’s 2026 finlet announcement describes a new fuselage device, not a replacement for winglets.
  • A single aircraft without a visible winglet is not a company policy statement. It may reflect eligibility, maintenance history or other factors that the company has not explained publicly.

Why a specific aircraft may lack a winglet

Delta’s public statements do not explain why any particular tail number lacks a winglet. Some general industry factors could plausibly play a role, but these are inference, not Delta’s stated rationale: whether an aircraft is eligible for modification, the cost of a retrofit compared with the remaining service life of the airframe, maintenance schedules, and how the aircraft is flown. None of these has been confirmed by Delta for any specific aircraft.

If you want to check a particular aircraft, compare its wingtips in photographs against the device descriptions above, and look up its tail number in a public aircraft registration database. Those steps tell you what the aircraft looks like, not why it was configured that way.

What the fuel figures do and do not show

Delta’s most widely cited fuel figure is not a winglet result. In its 2024 recap, Delta reported 41 million gallons of jet fuel saved cumulatively in 2024 through Carbon Council initiatives, which it equated to more than $100 million in cost savings. Delta attributed those savings to routing and landing procedures, catering-weight reductions and reduced auxiliary-power-unit use. Delta’s 2025 sustainability statements say jet fuel accounts for about 90% of its carbon emissions; that is company-reported context, not an estimate of winglet effects.
