A March 2020 fact-check reported that his management company, Gestifute, said the viral claim was false; Ronaldo was on Madeira, the island where he was born.
Where did the private-island story come from?
The claim circulated in March 2020, during the coronavirus crisis. Lead Stories traced the viral story to Hollywood Unlocked and reported that Gestifute, identified as Ronaldo’s management company, told the fact-checking outlet that the story was false. Lead Stories’ March 19, 2020 fact-check also said Ronaldo was on Madeira, where he was born—not on a newly purchased private island.
That is an attributed denial of the specific purchase story. It is not, by itself, a complete account of every property Ronaldo may own or use.
What Madeira property has been reported?
Some coverage may have helped blur the distinction between being on Madeira and owning an island. A May 2020 GQ India roundup described a luxury villa on Madeira as part of a feature about celebrity island homes. That lifestyle article does not independently verify ownership of a separate island.

In February 2025, idealista/news reported that Ronaldo had purchased a luxury property in Funchal in 2015. The property roundup concerns a property in Madeira’s capital; it is secondary reporting, not an official property-register finding, and it does not establish that Ronaldo bought Madeira itself or another private island.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Island, home, and private island are not interchangeable
- Madeira: The island where Ronaldo was born and where the 2020 fact-check said he was located.
- A home on Madeira: Lifestyle and property coverage has described or reported residences in Madeira, including a Funchal property.
- A separately owned private island: The reviewed sources do not establish that Ronaldo owns one near Madeira.
The word “private” can also describe access to a home or a portion of land; that is not the same claim as owning a separate island. The evidence supports treating the viral private-island purchase story as false according to Gestifute’s denial, rather than as a confirmed property fact.
