No. Checking your own credit score or credit report does not lower your score. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) says a self-request is not an inquiry for new credit and is treated as a soft inquiry. A lender’s request after you apply for credit is generally a hard inquiry, which can affect scores.
The important distinction is not whether a report was viewed, but who requested it and why. You can review your own information as often as needed without creating a score penalty, while applications for new credit may produce hard inquiries.

The short answer: a self-check is safe
When you request your own credit report or look up your own credit score, the request does not count as an application for new credit. It is a soft inquiry and does not lower your score. The CFPB states: “Checking your own credit report is not an inquiry about new credit, so it has no effect on your score.” That page was last reviewed May 14, 2024.

The same rule applies whether you are checking a full report for errors, viewing a score supplied for your personal use, or using an official report-access route. The act of looking at your information is different from authorizing a lender to evaluate you for a new account.

Hard inquiries are the requests that may affect scores. They generally occur when you apply for a credit card, auto loan, mortgage, student loan, or another consumer loan and authorize the lender to obtain your report.
Hard and soft inquiries compared
A credit inquiry is a request to view a credit report for a defined purpose, such as evaluating an application, managing an existing account, or providing a report to the consumer. The purpose and requester determine whether the inquiry is hard or soft.
| Comparison | Hard inquiry | Soft inquiry |
|---|---|---|
| Who usually initiates it? | A lender or other creditor after you apply for new credit. | You requesting your own report or score, an existing lender reviewing an account, or a company conducting prescreening. |
| Why is it requested? | To assess an application for a new credit card, loan, or similar account. | Personal access, account management, or a preliminary/prescreening purpose that is not a new-credit application. |
| Can it affect a score? | It can affect a score. Scoring models may consider how recently and how frequently you applied for credit. | No. Soft inquiries do not affect credit scores. |
| Who can see it? | It appears on the credit report and can be visible to organizations that receive the relevant report. | It is generally shown only to you and is not shown to others purchasing your report. |
The CFPB describes the categories in broad terms, but a particular organization’s access depends on the purpose for the request and the authorization involved. If you are unsure whether an interaction is an application, ask the company directly before giving permission to pull your report.

Opening a report for errors
Reviewing your report yourself is a consumer-initiated request. It does not signal that you are seeking new credit, so it does not lower your score. You can use a personal review to check account names, balances, payment history, and inquiries without turning the review into a hard pull.
Viewing a score supplied for your personal use
A score displayed for you to monitor is still a self-check when the request is made for your own information rather than to apply for an account. Scores can differ by scoring model, bureau data, and the date calculated, but viewing one does not create a hard inquiry.
Requesting an official report
The CFPB identifies AnnualCreditReport.com as the no-cost route for consumer reports from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. The CFPB says consumers can request reports online weekly from each of the three nationwide consumer reporting companies. The report-access policy can change, so confirm the current terms when you visit the official site. The CFPB also describes an additional Equifax free-copy allowance available through December 2026; that date-bound provision should be checked again after the stated end date.

When a hard inquiry usually occurs
Submitting a credit-card application
When you submit an application for a new credit card, the issuer will usually obtain a report through a hard inquiry. The inquiry becomes part of the report information and may be considered by scoring models along with other recent applications.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Applying for an auto, mortgage, student, or personal loan
The same principle applies to most consumer loans. A lender generally runs a hard inquiry after you apply or otherwise authorize an evaluation for new credit. A request for a loan quote is not automatically the same thing as an application; ask what authorization the lender needs and whether a report will be pulled.
Requesting preapproval
“Preapproval” is not a single technical process. Some prequalification systems use information that does not create a hard inquiry, while a preapproval that requires a full application may use one. Before proceeding, ask whether the check will be recorded as a hard inquiry, whether income or identity documentation is required, and at what point the application becomes binding for credit-review purposes.
Asking about rates without applying
The CFPB says that if you are simply asking about rates, the lender cannot pull your report. That conversation is different from completing an application, seeking preapproval, or giving authorization to access your report. State clearly that you are requesting general pricing information and want to know whether a credit check would be hard or soft before sharing information that starts an application.
Why hard inquiries can matter to your score
Hard inquiries are one signal that a scoring model may consider when estimating risk. Models may look at how recently you applied and how frequently you sought new credit. A single application does not produce a universal, guaranteed score change: the effect depends on the scoring model and the rest of the information in your file.
Because models differ, neither a lender nor a monitoring display can promise an identical result for every person. A hard inquiry may be more relevant when several new applications appear close together, but the inquiry is only one part of a score calculation. Your payment history, balances, account history, and other report data are evaluated separately.

Do not confuse a hard inquiry with a rejected application or a new account. The inquiry records the report request; the application decision and any account that ultimately opens are separate events that can have their own effects.
Rate shopping: the limited grouping protection
Comparing offers can involve several hard inquiries, especially for mortgages, auto loans, or student loans. Credit-scoring systems may group inquiries for the same type of loan when they occur within a short shopping period. The CFPB describes a general range of 14 to 45 days, depending on the scoring model, for same-type mortgage, auto, and student-loan inquiries.
The range is guidance, not a guarantee that every model or every lender will treat inquiries identically. The CFPB also notes that common models may give specified mortgage, auto, and student-loan inquiries made in the 30 days before scoring no effect. Those statements address particular loan types and model rules; they do not create a universal buffer for credit cards or unrelated forms of credit.
| Shopping situation | What the guidance supports | What remains uncertain |
|---|---|---|
| Several mortgage applications | Same-type inquiries may be grouped when made within a model’s 14-to-45-day window. Some common models disregard specified inquiries in the 30 days before scoring. | The exact treatment depends on the scoring model and how the lender reports the request. |
| Several auto-loan applications | The same general rate-shopping guidance can apply to same-type inquiries. | There is no single window guaranteed for every model. |
| Several student-loan applications | The CFPB includes student loans in the same general guidance. | Model-specific rules still control the result. |
| Credit-card applications | Do not assume the mortgage, auto, or student-loan grouping rule applies. | Multiple applications may be evaluated as separate inquiries. |
| Different kinds of credit | Inquiries for unrelated products are not necessarily grouped. | Shopping across products or outside the relevant window may be treated as multiple inquiries. |
A practical approach is to compare lenders for one loan type during as short a period as reasonably possible, while asking each lender when it will perform a hard pull. Keep records of the dates and products so you can identify unexpected inquiries later.
Credit report versus credit score
Your credit report is the underlying file: account information, payment history, balances, public-record information where applicable, and inquiry records. A credit score is a number calculated from report data using a particular scoring model.
Checking a report and checking a score are both safe when you are requesting your own information. However, access to a report does not necessarily include every score you might want. A report page may show no score, one score, or a score based on a particular model, bureau, or update date. If you are preparing for a specific application, ask which score model and bureau the lender uses rather than assuming a displayed score is identical.

Different scores do not mean that checking one caused another to fall. They can reflect different models, different report dates, or differences in the data held by each nationwide consumer reporting company.
How to check your information without starting an application
- Use a consumer-access route. For official reports, start with AnnualCreditReport.com, the route identified by the CFPB for reports from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.
- Confirm the purpose on any account dashboard. If a bank, card issuer, or other service displays a score, read the description to verify that the feature is for your personal monitoring and not a new-credit application.
- Ask before clicking an application button. “Check my rate,” “prequalify,” and “apply now” can involve different processes. Ask whether the next step uses a soft or hard inquiry.
- Save the date of each review. A simple log helps you distinguish your own soft checks from later lender inquiries.
- Inspect the inquiry section. Your report can show both hard and soft inquiries, although soft inquiries are generally visible only to you.
Checking your file before applying can help you correct inaccurate information and decide whether you are ready to seek credit. That preparation does not itself reduce your score.
What to do if you see an inquiry you do not recognize
An unfamiliar inquiry deserves follow-up, but it is not automatically evidence of identity theft. First, compare the inquiry name with companies you recently contacted; a lender may appear under a parent company or a different business name. Check whether you requested a rate quote, prequalification, account review, or another service that permitted a report access.
- Record the details. Note the company name, date, and whether the report labels the entry as hard or soft.
- Contact the company listed. Ask what transaction caused the inquiry and request confirmation of the authorization or application associated with it.
- Use the bureau’s dispute process if the explanation is inadequate. Follow the instructions supplied with the report and provide the factual details requested.
- Review the rest of the report. Look for unfamiliar accounts, addresses, or payment activity that could indicate a broader problem.
- Protect future applications. Until the issue is resolved, avoid submitting unnecessary applications that would create additional hard inquiries.
A self-check will not be converted into a hard inquiry merely because you noticed the entry while reviewing your report. The two events are recorded separately.
Common misconceptions, corrected
“Every credit check lowers my score.”
False. Your own report or score request, existing-account reviews, and prescreening are examples of soft inquiries that do not affect scores.

“A lender can pull my report when I only ask for rates.”
Not for a simple rate question, according to CFPB guidance. An application or authorized preapproval is different, so clarify the process before proceeding.

“All inquiries for any loan are combined.”
False. The rate-shopping guidance is limited to same-type mortgage, auto, and student-loan inquiries and depends on the scoring model. It should not be treated as a universal rule for credit cards or mixed products.
“A score I see online is the score every lender sees.”
Not necessarily. Lenders can use different models, bureaus, and report dates. Viewing the displayed score remains harmless, but the number may not match a lender’s version.
“A soft inquiry is hidden from everyone, including me.”
Soft inquiries are generally shown to you on your report, even though they are not shown to others purchasing the report. They provide a record of access without affecting your score.
A low-risk workflow before you apply for credit
- Review your own reports first. Use the official consumer-access route and check for inaccuracies or unfamiliar activity.
- Check the score model you are viewing. Treat the number as a model-specific estimate, not a universal lender score.
- Separate preparation from application. Research general rates and eligibility without authorizing a hard pull.
- Ask each lender about the inquiry. Confirm whether the next step is soft or hard and when it will occur.
- Shop same-type loans in a compact window. The CFPB’s 14-to-45-day range is model-dependent; do not assume it applies outside mortgage, auto, and student-loan shopping.
- Track every submission. Keep the lender name, product, and date so your report is easy to audit.
This workflow lets you monitor your credit freely while limiting avoidable applications. It also gives you the information needed to challenge an inquiry that does not match anything you authorized.
What the rule means for your next credit decision
You do not need to avoid your own credit report or score out of fear that checking will lower it. Regular self-checks are useful for catching errors and understanding what a lender may see. The event that requires care is the new-credit application: determine whether the company will make a hard inquiry, and, for mortgage, auto, or student-loan shopping, keep same-type applications within a short, model-appropriate period.
The CFPB’s consumer guidance is written for the United States. Inquiry definitions are broadly stable, but report-access allowances and the way individual scoring models implement rate-shopping rules can change. Verify current terms when you request a report or begin an application.
