Recommended Free Tools
Yes—ChatGPT has a free plan, but access to advanced models and tools is limited. Paid plans add higher limits, richer features, team administration, or enterprise controls. As of August 18, 2026, OpenAI’s main listed options include Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise. ChatGPT subscriptions are also separate from OpenAI API billing.
Updated August 18, 2026: OpenAI changes model access, usage limits, plan names, and regional availability periodically. Prices and features below reflect the official pages checked on that date.
ChatGPT pricing at a glance
For individual users, the practical choice is usually between Free and Plus. Pro is intended for exceptionally heavy users, while Business and Enterprise are designed for organizations rather than ordinary personal accounts.
| Plan | Listed price | Best for | What matters most |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 per month | Occasional personal use | Basic access with limits on models and tools |
| Go | Varies by supported market | Users seeking a lower-cost paid tier | Availability, features, and possible advertising vary by region |
| Plus | $20 per month | Regular individual users | Expanded access to advanced models and tools |
| Pro | $200 per month | Very heavy professional users | Highest individual access tier, subject to guardrails |
| Business | $20 per user monthly when billed annually, or $25 per user monthly when billed monthly | Teams | Managed workspace, administration, and business controls; two-user minimum shown by OpenAI |
| Enterprise | Custom pricing | Large organizations | Contractual, security, support, and deployment requirements |
See OpenAI’s consumer pricing page and the current ChatGPT pricing interface for the plan and price shown for your account. Regional pricing, taxes, currency conversion, and availability can change the amount you see at checkout.

Is ChatGPT actually free?
Yes. OpenAI offers a ChatGPT Free plan at $0 per month. A free account can be enough for occasional questions, drafting, rewriting, summarizing, brainstorming, and experimentation.
“Free” does not mean unlimited access to every feature. Free users may face limits on advanced models, reasoning, image generation, file uploads, data analysis, voice, and research features. Limits can also depend on the model, tool, rolling time window, demand, account, and location.
If ChatGPT temporarily blocks a feature or asks you to wait, that does not necessarily mean the service is no longer free. It generally means you have reached the applicable free-tier limit.
ChatGPT Plus: $20 per month
ChatGPT Plus is the standard paid upgrade for an individual. OpenAI lists it at $20 per month.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Compared with Free, Plus is positioned around expanded access to advanced models and tools. The current plan description includes expanded limits, advanced voice features, video and screensharing, deep research, multiple reasoning models, projects, tasks, custom GPT creation, and opportunities to test new features.
Plus is usually the sensible choice when:
- You use ChatGPT daily or several times each week.
- Free-tier limits interrupt work or study.
- You regularly use files, images, voice, research, or reasoning features.
- You want projects, tasks, or custom GPTs.
- You want predictable subscription billing for the ChatGPT application.
Plus should not be described as unlimited access to every model or tool. OpenAI can apply model-specific, tool-specific, rolling-window, capacity, and abuse-prevention limits.
ChatGPT Pro: who should pay $200 per month?
OpenAI lists ChatGPT Pro at $200 per month and positions it as the highest-access individual plan. It includes the Plus offering and provides higher access to advanced voice, deep research, Sora, and selected research-preview tools. OpenAI also describes unlimited access to certain reasoning models and GPT-4o, subject to abuse guardrails and the conditions of the plan.
Rank #2
Pro may make sense when ChatGPT is a core professional tool and higher access has measurable economic value—for example, when extensive reasoning, research, coding, or media-generation work saves substantial paid working time.
It is not automatically good value for a casual user, most students, or someone who mainly asks occasional questions. “Unlimited” should not be read as a promise that every model, feature, or tool has no quota, no capacity restriction, or no acceptable-use condition.
What is ChatGPT Go?
ChatGPT Go is a lower-cost paid tier shown on the current ChatGPT pricing interface in supported markets. OpenAI does not establish one universal Go price or identical feature list for every country in the supplied pricing evidence.
Go may also be associated with advertising in some markets or rollout configurations. Ads and availability can vary by region, account, and rollout status. Check the pricing page shown after signing in before subscribing; do not assume that a price or feature description from another country applies to you.
Go may not have existed, or may not have been generally available in the same form, during 2025. That is one reason older “2025 ChatGPT pricing” articles can have an incomplete plan lineup.
ChatGPT Business pricing
ChatGPT Business is a per-seat workspace for organizations. OpenAI lists it at:
- $20 per user per month when billed annually.
- $25 per user per month when billed monthly.
- Two or more users, according to the plan information shown by OpenAI.
Business is not simply Plus with a few extra prompts. It is designed for centralized billing, workspace administration, usage analytics, budgeting and spend controls, SAML single sign-on, multifactor authentication, workplace connectors, and business-oriented data handling. OpenAI describes business data as not being used for training by default.
Rank #3
Business is a better fit than separate Plus accounts when multiple people need a managed workspace or the organization needs administrative and data controls. A solo user seeking only higher personal limits may find Plus simpler.
Business and Enterprise customers may also encounter flexible pricing, usage controls, or overage arrangements. Do not treat a business plan as an unlimited fixed-cost promise without reviewing the applicable settings and terms. See OpenAI’s flexible pricing guidance.

ChatGPT Enterprise pricing
ChatGPT Enterprise has custom pricing; OpenAI does not publish one universal monthly rate.
Enterprise is aimed at organizations needing features such as expanded context, enterprise security and access controls, SCIM, analytics, domain verification, data residency options, priority support, service-level agreements, custom legal terms, invoicing, and volume arrangements.
Enterprise is relevant when procurement, contractual commitments, identity management, compliance, retention, regional data requirements, or large-scale deployment matter. It is generally unnecessary for an individual or a small group without those governance needs.
ChatGPT subscription versus API billing
Important: ChatGPT Plus or Pro does not automatically include API credits.
ChatGPT is the consumer or workspace application. The OpenAI API is the developer platform used to build applications, websites, automations, and bots. A ChatGPT subscription does not pay for API calls, and API usage is billed separately under the applicable model and usage rules.
Rank #4
If you want to use OpenAI models inside software you are building, budget separately for API usage. API rates are model-specific and can change independently of ChatGPT subscription prices, so consult OpenAI’s current API documentation rather than relying on a static rate table.
Are there ads in ChatGPT?
OpenAI’s current pricing and rollout information indicates that ads may apply to some free or lower-cost experiences. This is not necessarily universal: availability can depend on market, account, and rollout status. Check the plan details displayed for your account.
Do not assume that every free user sees ads, or that every paid experience is permanently ad-free, without checking the current terms for your region and plan.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTaxes, mobile billing, and the final price
The advertised monthly price may not equal the final amount charged. Sales tax, VAT or other taxes, regional pricing, currency conversion, and payment-channel rules can affect checkout.
Subscriptions started on the web are handled through OpenAI’s website. Subscriptions started through an iPhone or Android app may be processed by Apple’s App Store or Google Play instead. The billing total, renewal details, payment management, and cancellation path can differ by channel. Before paying, confirm:
- The currency and total shown at checkout.
- Whether tax is included.
- Whether billing is monthly or annual.
- Which company is processing the payment.
- Where you must manage or cancel the subscription.
Which ChatGPT plan should you choose?
- Start with Free if you use ChatGPT occasionally and can tolerate limits.
- Choose Plus if you use it regularly, repeatedly hit free limits, or need expanded access to advanced tools. The listed price is $20 per month.
- Consider Pro only if ChatGPT is central to your work and the additional access can justify $200 per month.
- Choose Business when two or more people need a managed workspace, centralized billing, administration, or business data controls.
- Choose Enterprise when procurement, contractual terms, compliance, support commitments, or large-scale deployment require a custom arrangement.
- Use the API separately if your goal is to build software or automate a workflow. Do not buy Plus expecting API credits.
A practical upgrade test is simple: remain on Free until a recurring limit or required feature costs you more time or money than the paid plan. Upgrade to Plus before considering Pro. Move to Business because you need governance and collaboration—not merely because one person wants more prompts.

Best Value
- ChatGPT: a broad general-purpose ecosystem with personal plans, workspace plans, custom GPTs, projects, multimodal tools, and a separate API.
- Claude: Anthropic lists a free tier, Pro at $20 monthly or an annual-discount equivalent shown as $17 per month with $200 billed upfront, Max from $100 monthly, Team pricing, and custom Enterprise pricing. Its Pro offering emphasizes higher usage, model selection, projects, research, extended thinking, and Claude Code. Claude Pro also does not include API usage. See Anthropic’s pricing page and its Pro plan explanation.
- Perplexity: a strong fit for search-first research and cited answers. Its API is separately billed, and a consumer Pro subscription is not required for API use. See Perplexity’s billing guidance.
- Google Gemini: may be attractive to people deeply invested in Google services, but plan prices, storage, model access, and included features should be checked on Google’s current official plan page before making a comparison.
Why older 2025 pricing guides can mislead
AI pricing changes quickly. Older coverage may call the team offering “ChatGPT Team” rather than Business, omit Go, list models that are no longer current, or present message quotas as permanent. It may also blur the distinction between ChatGPT subscriptions and the API.
Use the live official pricing page for your country when you subscribe. Treat model names, quotas, advertising, taxes, and regional offers as date-sensitive rather than permanent definitions of a plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use ChatGPT without a credit card?
Yes. The Free plan is available at $0 per month, although some features and usage levels are limited.
Can I cancel ChatGPT Plus?
Cancellation depends on where you subscribed. Web subscriptions are managed through OpenAI, while subscriptions billed by Apple or Google generally must be managed through the relevant app store.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

You may need to wait for the limit to reset, switch to an available model or feature, or upgrade. The exact behavior depends on the plan, model, tool, and current usage rules.
Are ChatGPT personal conversations used for training?
Data controls differ between personal and business offerings. Review the current privacy and data-control settings for your account; do not assume the Business or Enterprise defaults apply to personal plans.
The Bottom Line
Start with ChatGPT Free. Upgrade to Plus when recurring limits or needed tools justify $20 per month, consider Pro only when heavy use has clear economic value, and choose Business or Enterprise for organizational governance. Keep API spending in a separate budget because a ChatGPT subscription does not include API credits.
