The headline points to the Cisco lithium exploration project in Quebec, not to a proven Canadian reserve capable of powering a stated number of electric vehicles. The article behind the claim reported promising drill results, but said Cisco was not a mine and had no formal mineral resource estimate when it was published on December 29, 2025. A drill intercept is evidence of lithium-bearing rock in a sampled interval—not a measure of a mine’s total supply or a basis for calculating EV output.
What project is the headline referring to?
The headline refers to Cisco, a lithium exploration project controlled by Q2 Metals in Quebec’s James Bay region, as identified in the December 29, 2025 article by Indian Defence Review. The article described Cisco as an early-stage project. It did not describe an operating mine.
The article reported a drill intercept of 272.5 metres at 1.61% lithium oxide in hole CS25-036, along with other intervals, and said mineralization remained open. These are figures reported by that article; they have not been independently verified here against a primary Q2 Metals disclosure. A drill intercept describes mineralization encountered in a particular hole. On its own, it does not establish the deposit’s total size, how much material could be recovered, whether extraction would be economic, or how much battery-grade lithium it could ultimately produce.
Is Cisco an “almost inexhaustible” reserve?
No such conclusion follows from the reported drilling. The December 2025 article said Cisco had no formal mineral resource estimate at that time. More fundamentally, “resource” and “reserve” are not interchangeable terms.

Resource versus reserve
Natural Resources Canada explains that a mineral resource is an identified concentration with reasonable prospects for eventual extraction. A mineral reserve is the portion that has been explored, assessed, and evaluated to establish technical and economic viability. Consequently, drill results can support further exploration without proving that a commercially mineable reserve exists. The word “inexhaustible” is stronger still: no finite project estimate would mean a literal limitless supply, and the cited article’s information does not establish an enormous reserve.

Can the results be translated into millions of EVs?
Not from the cited drill intercept. An EV-count estimate requires, at minimum, a defensible estimate of the project’s recoverable lithium, processing and recovery assumptions, the product’s suitability for battery supply, and the amount of lithium assumed per vehicle. The reported interval supplies none of those project-wide figures. Without them, a vehicle count would be speculation rather than a Cisco production forecast.
Canada-wide or unrelated regional figures cannot fill that gap. Natural Resources Canada reported a national lithium resource estimate of 6.5 million tonnes in 2026; this is a country-level figure, not an estimate for Cisco (NRCan’s 2026 lithium resource figure). Separately, the Alberta Geological Survey estimated 82.5 million tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent in place in Alberta brines in 2026, using a minimum concentration of 50 mg/L. That is an in-place brine estimate—not a reserve and not the Quebec hard-rock Cisco project (Alberta Geological Survey’s estimate).

Those numbers refer to different geographies, deposit types, units, and categories. Adding or attributing them to Cisco would give a misleading picture of the project.

The December 2025 article said a resource estimate was planned for the first half of 2026. That planned window has passed, but the information available for this article does not establish whether Q2 Metals published an estimate or what Cisco’s current status is. The estimate’s status should therefore be treated as unverified—not assumed completed or still pending.

If a later estimate is published, its effective date and reporting category matter. An inferred resource, for example, is not the same thing as a reserve. Any serious project-scale comparison should also identify the deposit type, reporting standard, tonnage and grade, recovery assumptions, study stage, permitting, infrastructure, and project status.
