Not as a current, guaranteed rate. Apple reported an average of $0.01 per play for individual paid Apple Music plans in 2020, including label and publisher royalties. That historical platform average is not an artist’s take-home pay, and it does not establish that Apple currently pays artists twice as much as Spotify. Both services describe royalties as allocations based on listening and revenue, not fixed amounts owed for each stream.
Where the “twice as much” claim came from
In 2021, Apple said its average per-play value for individual paid plans was $0.01 in 2020. News coverage framed the figure as about twice Spotify’s payout. Apple’s own explanation adds important limits: the value varies by subscription plan and country or region, and the figure includes royalties for labels and publishers as well as other rights holders. That comparison describes historical averages, not a universal tariff. The available figures do not show a current, like-for-like Apple-versus-Spotify artist payout ratio.
Why a “per-stream rate” is only an average
Apple says its average varies with plan and territory. Spotify says royalties are calculated on “streamshare”: the share of eligible listening attributable to an artist or songwriter, rather than a fixed payment for each play. The value implied by dividing total royalties by total streams can therefore change with listener activity, revenue, subscription mix, advertising, and territory. Spotify’s royalty guide

Spotify’s reported total is a different kind of figure. Its Loud & Clear FAQ says it paid more than $11 billion in 2025 to the music industry’s rights holders. That platform-reported annual total is not a per-stream rate and cannot be directly compared with Apple’s 2020 average per play. Spotify Loud & Clear
Who receives streaming royalties?
Streaming revenue can involve separate rights in a recording and in the underlying composition. The platform’s payment to a rights holder is not necessarily the amount an individual performer or songwriter receives.

Recording royalties
Recording royalties go to the recording’s rights holder, often a label or distributor. The artist’s share depends on their agreement, including any applicable fees or recoupment terms.
Publishing royalties
Publishing royalties relate to the song’s composition. They may be paid through publishers, performance rights organizations (PROs), and mechanical agencies to songwriters or composition owners. Registration and administration affect whether usage can be matched and royalties collected.

A useful comparison needs more than a headline rate. Check that the services’ figures use comparable periods and denominators, then account for the factors that affect the allocation and the artist’s share:

- Royalty pool and revenue: Spotify’s guide says about two-thirds of its music revenue is allocated to recording and publishing royalties; within that allocation, it describes the split as approximately four-fifths recording and one-fifth publishing. These are Spotify’s descriptions of its own model, not a comparison with Apple. Spotify for Artists
- Plan and territory: Subscription and ad-supported listening, local revenue, and country or region can affect the value associated with a stream.
- Listening share and volume: Streamshare depends on how listening is distributed across a service and on total engagement.
- Rights and payment route: Recording and composition royalties follow different paths and may be administered by different organizations.
- Contract terms: Label, distributor, publisher, or administrator agreements determine the portion ultimately paid to an artist or songwriter.
How artists can investigate their own statements
- Review the rights-holder statement or dashboard. Spotify’s guide says statements should show usage, service, territory, and period. Compare the same periods and territories when checking reported plays against payments.
- Identify which rights are covered. Check whether a statement concerns recording royalties, publishing royalties, or both, and which company or organization is paying.
- Check the agreement and account details. Review the applicable royalty share, fees, advance and recoupment status, and any distributor or publisher terms.
- Register compositions for collection. Songwriters should register works with a PRO, mechanical agency, or publisher so usage can be tracked and publishing royalties paid, as applicable to their territory and arrangements.
Apple says it does not pay a lower royalty rate in exchange for editorial playlist placement, personalized playlists, or algorithmic recommendations. Apple Music for Artists
