On Amazon.com in the United States, non-Prime shoppers can generally get free standard delivery when they place an order containing at least $35 of eligible items. The offer is not universal: eligibility depends on the products, seller, fulfillment method, destination, and delivery option. Amazon says qualifying non-Prime delivery may take five to eight days.

How to get free Amazon shipping without Prime
- Add items to your cart and check whether the eligible-item subtotal reaches $35.
- Open each product page and review its delivery message, fulfillment details, and shipping eligibility.
- Proceed to checkout and review the delivery choices Amazon displays for your address.
- Select the free standard delivery option if it is available. The label may vary by account, device, location, or order type.
- Before placing the order, confirm that the final order summary shows no shipping charge.
The checkout page is the final test. A product-page message or search-result label does not guarantee that the same delivery option will be available after Amazon applies your address, inventory, seller, and order details.
What counts toward Amazon’s $35 minimum?
Amazon’s current consumer-facing explanation refers to at least $35 of eligible items—not simply any cart whose displayed total exceeds $35. Amazon advises shoppers to check whether products are fulfilled and shipped by Amazon and eligible for free delivery. See Amazon’s explanation of free delivery.
#1 Best Overall
- Amazon.com Gift Cards never expire and carry no fees.
- Multiple gift card designs and denominations to choose from.
- Redeemable towards millions of items store-wide at Amazon.com or certain affiliated websites.
- Available for immediate delivery. Gift cards sent by email can be scheduled up to a year in advance.
- No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.
Listings can involve several different arrangements:
- Amazon-sold and Amazon-fulfilled items: These are often the clearest candidates, but the listing and checkout still control.
- Marketplace items fulfilled by Amazon: They may be eligible for a delivery offer, but fulfillment alone is not an automatic guarantee.
- Marketplace items shipped by the seller: The seller may set separate shipping charges, minimums, or delivery terms.
- Items from different fulfillment streams: Amazon may calculate eligibility separately or ship products in multiple packages.
- Special-handling products: Large, hazardous, perishable, or otherwise restricted items may follow different rules.
Taxes, fees, gift services, and ineligible products may not help satisfy the threshold. Amazon’s public explanation does not provide one universal formula for every order, so rely on the eligible subtotal Amazon shows rather than assuming every dollar in the cart counts.
How long does free non-Prime delivery take?
Amazon says qualifying non-Prime delivery can take five to eight days. That is an estimate, not a guaranteed range. The date shown for your order can depend on inventory, destination, order timing, weekends, holidays, and whether Amazon splits the order into separate shipments.

Free shipping also does not necessarily mean one package or one delivery date. It means that the applicable standard-delivery option has no shipping charge.
Why does Amazon still show a shipping charge over $35?
A cart total above $35 can still fail to qualify when the qualifying portion is below the threshold or when the selected service is not standard delivery. Common explanations include:
- Some of the $35 consists of products that are not eligible.
- An item is shipped directly by a third-party seller with its own policy.
- A product has special handling or delivery requirements.
- Your ZIP code or service area does not support the advertised option.
- You selected expedited, scheduled, same-day, or another paid service.
- Amazon split the order into separate shipments or applied different item-level shipping terms.
- The product-page offer applied to a different fulfillment option, seller, or delivery date.
- Inventory changed between browsing and checkout.
A practical troubleshooting checklist
- Inspect each item’s seller, fulfillment, and delivery information.
- Temporarily remove questionable marketplace or special-handling products.
- Recheck the subtotal of eligible items.
- Return to the standard delivery choices rather than a faster paid option.
- Review the shipping charge for each shipment or item in the order summary.
- If Amazon advertised free delivery but charges you at checkout, save screenshots and contact Amazon customer service.
An isolated checkout problem should not be treated as proof that Amazon has permanently changed its general policy. The applicable offer is the one Amazon displays for your specific order and address.

What about orders under $35?
An order below the applicable eligible-item threshold may show a shipping charge, although Amazon does not use one universal fee for every product and destination. Your choices may include:
- Adding another eligible item to reach $35.
- Waiting and combining purchases into a future order.
- Choosing a slower or consolidated option if Amazon offers one.
- Paying the displayed shipping charge.
- Comparing the charge with the cost and benefits of Prime.
Do not buy an unwanted item solely to cross the threshold. Compare the total cost, including the extra item, with the shipping fee or an alternative retailer’s price.

Third-party sellers and free shipping
Some third-party sellers offer free shipping, but their policies are not uniform. A seller may include shipping in the item price, offer free delivery only above a seller-specific minimum, or charge shipping regardless of cart size. A marketplace item may also be fulfilled by Amazon without automatically receiving the same delivery offer as an Amazon-sold product.
Check the listing’s seller and delivery message, then verify the final checkout total. Items bought from different sellers may ship separately and may carry separate charges.
Amazon grocery delivery is different
The $35 merchandise-shipping rule should not be applied automatically to Amazon Fresh, Whole Foods, or local grocery delivery. These services have separate delivery fees and order-size rules, and non-Prime fees can vary by grocery service and order size. Read Amazon’s current grocery ordering and delivery information.

Amazon also lists a separate grocery delivery subscription for certain Prime members at $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year, with a stated $4.99-per-month price for eligible Prime Access members. That subscription concerns grocery delivery, not ordinary Amazon.com package shipping. Details and availability can change.
Should you get Prime just for shipping?
Prime is more likely to make financial sense if you frequently place orders below $35, need fast delivery, regularly buy Prime-eligible products, or use Prime’s non-shipping benefits. It may be poor value if you shop occasionally, can consolidate purchases, and are comfortable waiting several days.
Use your actual avoided shipping charges rather than assuming every order would incur the same fee. At an illustrative $7 avoided charge per shipment, about 20 shipments would equal $140. At $5, it would take about 28 shipments; at $10, about 14. These are break-even illustrations, not Amazon’s shipping schedule, and they exclude the value of Prime’s other benefits.

- Prime for Young Adults: Amazon’s February 2026 announcement says eligible 18–24-year-olds can receive a six-month $0 trial, followed by $7.49 monthly or $69 annually. Trial and eligibility terms can change; see Amazon’s Young Adults page.
- Prime Access: Eligible customers may qualify for discounted Prime membership. Check Amazon’s current eligibility page rather than relying on an outdated checklist.
- Other retailer memberships: If you already shop heavily at Walmart, compare the value of Walmart+ instead of automatically adding Prime.
Alternatives to paying for Amazon shipping
If you need one inexpensive item quickly, compare Amazon’s total price—including shipping—with another retailer. Store pickup may be cheaper or faster. You can also wait to combine purchases, use a retailer membership you already pay for, or choose a seller whose shipping is included in the item price.
Quick Recap
Decision guide
- At least $35 in eligible items? Look for free standard delivery at checkout.
- Under $35? Add a genuinely useful eligible item, wait to combine orders, or compare the shipping fee.
- Need the item immediately? Compare a paid non-Prime faster option with Prime’s cost and benefits.
- Buying groceries? Check the separate grocery fee schedule.
- Still charged over $35? Inspect eligibility, seller, fulfillment, category, address, and delivery-option details.
