If you are 16 or older and fishing or attempting to fish on Lake Hamilton, plan to carry a valid Arkansas fishing license. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) describes a limited exception for licensed put-and-take pay lakes, but the sources cited here do not identify Lake Hamilton as one or establish a Lake Hamilton-specific waiver.
Who needs an Arkansas fishing license?
AGFC guidance says anyone age 16 or older must have a valid Arkansas fishing license to take or attempt to take aquatic wildlife, subject to the licensed put-and-take pay-lake exception. Children younger than 16 do not need a fishing license under this general rule. Check current requirements for your situation in the AGFC fishing license and permit information and AGFC fishing FAQ.
Which license should you buy?
The license depends on Arkansas residency and how long you plan to fish. AGFC’s listed fees are:
| License type | Listed fee |
|---|---|
| Resident annual fishing license | $10.50 |
| Nonresident annual fishing license | $60 |
| Nonresident one-day trip license | $15 |
| Nonresident three-day trip license | $30 |
These are fees listed in the cited AGFC materials; confirm the current price and terms with AGFC before purchasing, since fees can change. AGFC generally describes Arkansas residency as physically inhabiting a bona fide Arkansas residence for at least 60 days and declaring full-time residence. Specific provisions apply to some students and military personnel; consult the AGFC residency and license FAQ if your status is not straightforward.

AGFC says licenses can be purchased through its website, authorized dealers, regional offices, nature centers, headquarters, or by phone. Use the official licensing page for current purchase options.
Does Lake Hamilton require a trout permit?
AGFC requires a separate trout permit to keep trout from any Arkansas water, and also requires one to fish in certain specifically named waters. Lake Hamilton is not included on the AGFC list of specified trout waters, so that list does not indicate a trout permit is required merely to fish there. If you keep trout, however, you need the permit. Check the AGFC license and permit guidance for current details.

What exceptions or special rules could apply?
Licensed put-and-take pay lakes
Arkansas’s pay-lake exception is narrow: it applies to private waters licensed by the Commission and open to the public for fishing for a fee. A public reservoir, paid boat launch, or fee-based access site should not be assumed to qualify. The cited sources do not establish that Lake Hamilton is a licensed put-and-take pay lake.
Free Fishing Weekend
Arkansas’s 2026 Free Fishing Weekend ran from noon June 12 through midnight June 14. During that period, anyone could fish without a fishing license or trout stamp, but other fishing regulations and access restrictions still applied. Those 2026 dates have passed; check AGFC for the next announced dates. See the AGFC news and announcements for updates.

AGFC-owned lands and lakes
Effective July 1, 2026, people age 16 or older using AGFC-owned wildlife management areas or lakes generally need a valid Arkansas hunting or fishing license or a $10.50 WMA/Lake Conservation Permit, subject to listed exceptions. The cited information does not establish that Lake Hamilton itself is AGFC-owned. Verify the ownership and rules for the specific shoreline, launch, or access site before relying on this ownership-specific permit rule. The current AGFC guidebooks and regulations provide the agency’s published rules.

AGFC describes its guidebook as an interpretive summary rather than a legal document; official Commission regulations take precedence. The 2026–27 guidebook is effective July 1, 2026, and AGFC advises checking for later changes. For a legal edge case or questions about a particular access area, consult current AGFC regulations or contact the Commission directly.
