If you are 18 or older and fish recreationally in New South Wales, you generally need to pay the NSW recreational fishing fee and carry proof of payment. The rule covers fresh and salt water and some activities beyond rod fishing. Specific exemptions apply, so check the criteria before you go.
Who needs a NSW fishing licence?
NSW calls it a recreational fishing fee as well as a licence. The fee generally applies to anyone aged 18 or older who fishes recreationally in NSW fresh or salt water. It also covers activities including spearfishing, hand lining, hand gathering, trapping, bait collecting and prawn netting. The stated requirement also applies to possessing fishing gear in, on or adjacent to waters. See NSW Primary Industries’ fee guidance.
This is a NSW requirement, not a national licence. A licence issued by another state, territory or country is not valid for fishing in NSW waters, according to the NSW Freshwater Fishing Guide 2024.
Who is exempt from paying?
NSW Primary Industries lists these exemptions. If you rely on one, carry the relevant proof while fishing.
