Do You Earn Tips? You May Qualify for a 2025 Tax Deduction of Up to $25,000

Workers with qualified tips in 2025 may be eligible for a federal deduction of up to $25,000. Occupation, tip type, records, income, and self-employment limits matter.

If you received tips in 2025, you may be able to deduct up to $25,000 from your federal taxable income—but earning tips alone does not qualify you. The temporary deduction depends on your occupation, the type and documentation of your tips, your income, and (if you are self-employed) your business income. It does not make tips nontaxable or eliminate the need to report them.

What the 2025 tip deduction does—and does not do

The federal deduction applies to qualified tips received in tax years 2025 through 2028. For a 2025 return, it is claimed on Schedule 1-A and reduces taxable income; it is not a $25,000 refund or a blanket exemption from tax on tips. The IRS says the deduction is available whether you itemize or take the standard deduction. IRS guidance issued November 21, 2025.

Tip income remains subject to reporting rules. The IRS addresses the question “Is my tip income taxable?” separately from whether a taxpayer can claim the new deduction. IRS Topic No. 761.

Who may qualify

You must meet the rules for your work, tips, income, and records. The IRS has issued final regulations and an occupation list covering more than 70 occupations. Check the official list rather than assuming that a job qualifies because customers sometimes leave tips. IRS final regulations and occupation list, April 10, 2026.

Your occupation must be on the IRS list

The deduction is limited to workers in occupations that customarily and regularly received tips on or before December 31, 2024, as identified by the IRS. The list, not an employer’s job title or a customer’s occasional gratuity, is the place to verify your occupation.

The tips must be qualified tips

Qualified tips are voluntary cash or charged tips from customers, including tips received through a tip-sharing arrangement. A mandatory service charge is not automatically a qualified tip. The IRS’s tip-income guidance explains the distinction and reporting context.

Income and identification rules apply

The maximum deduction is reduced when modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) exceeds $150,000 for most filers or $300,000 for married taxpayers filing jointly. The IRS summarizes the thresholds in its November 21, 2025 guidance. A valid Social Security number is also among the eligibility requirements summarized in the IRS’s March 2026 guidance. Filing-status details and the calculation should be checked in the current Schedule 1-A instructions.

How much you can deduct

The annual maximum is $25,000 per return, not a guaranteed deduction for everyone with tips. The deduction phases out above the applicable MAGI threshold, and self-employed workers are subject to an additional business-income limit. It is available to both itemizers and taxpayers who use the standard deduction. IRS guidance, November 21, 2025.

If you are an employee

Use the current Schedule 1-A instructions to calculate the allowable deduction based on your qualified tips, filing circumstances, and income. Do not treat total tips or the $25,000 ceiling as the amount automatically deductible.

If you are self-employed

Your deduction cannot exceed the net income, before this deduction, from the trade or business in which you earned the tips. A loss or low net income from that business can therefore limit the deduction even if your tip records show a larger amount. See the IRS’s final-regulation guidance and current Schedule 1-A instructions.

What records to gather for 2025

For 2025, employers and payors were not required to separately report cash tips on Forms W-2 and 1099. The absence of a separate tip figure on those forms does not by itself settle whether you can claim the deduction: IRS Notice 2025-69 describes ways taxpayers may establish qualified tip amounts using other records, depending on their circumstances. IRS Notice 2025-69.

Gather records that show the tips you received and any amounts shared with other workers. The notice discusses evidence that may be relevant, including earnings statements, receipts, point-of-sale reports, daily tip logs, and third-party settlement records. Which records and method apply depends on worker status and circumstances; no single record type is established as sufficient for every taxpayer.

How to claim the deduction on a 2025 return

  1. Check your occupation. Compare your work with the IRS tipped-occupation list in the final-regulation materials.
  2. Identify and document qualified tips received in 2025. Gather available employer or payor statements and supporting records, using the approach relevant to your circumstances under Notice 2025-69.
  3. Check the limits that apply to you. Review MAGI and filing status; if self-employed, determine net income before the deduction from the business in which the tips were earned.
  4. Complete Schedule 1-A. Attach it to the applicable 2025 Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR, and follow the current line-by-line instructions. Use the IRS Schedule 1-A page for the form and instructions.

Because the 2025 forms were not changed to separately account for cash tips, use the current IRS instructions and the documentation rules that fit your situation rather than relying on a W-2 or 1099 tip box that may not exist.

Quick Recap

Questions to resolve before filing

  • Is your occupation on the IRS list?
  • Were the amounts voluntary customer tips rather than mandatory service charges?
  • Can your records support the amount of qualified tips claimed?
  • Does your MAGI reduce the deduction, and, if you are self-employed, does the relevant business have enough net income to support it?
  • Are you using the current Schedule 1-A instructions for your filing status and return type?
