Do Super Bowl Halftime Performers Get Paid?

Super Bowl halftime headliners generally do not receive a conventional appearance-fee paycheck from the NFL. The league covers production and performer expenses, and union-scale pay may apply. Those are separate things: a show budget is not the headliner’s fee, and a widely repeated estimate of about $1,000 per day is conditional—not a confirmed payment to every performer.

What does the NFL pay the halftime headliner?

Associated Press reporting says the NFL handles the show’s production costs and performers’ expenses, while CBS News reported in 2025 that Kendrick Lamar did not collect a paycheck for his halftime performance. Taken together, this supports the general practice that the headline artist does not receive a conventional NFL appearance fee. It does not establish the private contract terms for every artist or every Super Bowl.

Keep three kinds of money distinct: an appearance fee paid to the artist, wages that may be due under a union contract, and expenses the league pays to put on the show. Paying production or travel costs is not the same as paying the headliner a fee.

Could performers receive union-scale pay?

Yes, union-scale compensation may apply to performers covered by a union contract. CBS News reported in 2025 that, assuming the most recent SAG-AFTRA contract applied, the amount would be about $1,000 per day. That is a conditional estimate, not an official NFL rate or a confirmed payment to Lamar. It also does not establish what each guest artist, musician, dancer, or other participant received.

The sources do not disclose the full current contracts, role-by-role classifications, or a definitive rate schedule for everyone on the field. So there is no reliable basis for calculating a named headliner’s exact paycheck from the estimate.

What expenses does the NFL cover?

AP reports that the NFL handles production costs and performer expenses. CBS also reports that travel and production expenses are covered. These are costs of staging the performance, not personal appearance-fee earnings. The available reporting does not itemize every covered expense or disclose the financial arrangements for each individual performer.

Why perform without a conventional fee?

The halftime show offers a large cultural platform and worldwide exposure, which can be valuable promotion for an artist. That potential benefit is not wages, a guaranteed commercial return, or a disclosed payment amount.

The show’s prominence grew over time. AP reports that Michael Jackson’s 1993 performance changed how major pop acts approached the halftime stage, and that Roc Nation has produced the show since 2019. The NFL’s page for the 2025 halftime show describes Kendrick Lamar’s performance with SZA as the most-watched Super Bowl halftime show and gives an audience figure of 133.5 million viewers. That figure indicates reach, not what performers earned.

What do recent examples establish?

Performer or show What is reported What is not established
Kendrick Lamar, 2025 CBS News reported he did not collect a paycheck for the performance. A specific union-scale payment, if any, or the terms for every participant.
Bad Bunny, Super Bowl LX in 2026 The NFL’s halftime page identifies him as the headliner. A specific fee, payment, or contract term.

A report about one performer does not prove the terms of another artist’s private agreement. For Bad Bunny, the NFL announcement establishes the booking, not compensation.

How to read claims about halftime-show pay

  • “The artist gets nothing” can obscure possible union-scale wages and covered expenses.
  • “The NFL spends money on the show” describes production costs, not necessarily a fee paid to the headliner.
  • “The performer makes about $1,000 a day” overstates CBS’s conditional estimate if presented as a confirmed or universal rate.
  • “The artist is paid in exposure” describes a possible promotional benefit, not cash compensation or a guaranteed return.

Historical accounts also warrant care: at a 2004 congressional hearing, Viacom executive Mel Karmazin qualified his recollection that performers were not paid and expenses were covered. That earlier, qualified statement is context, not proof of today’s contract terms.
