William M. Volckmann II’s study estimates an average 20% revenue decline relative to an uncracked counterfactual when Denuvo is cracked very early. When protection lasts at least 12 weeks, the study finds piracy leads to nearly zero average total-revenue loss. Those are estimates for the study’s PC-game setting—not a bill or forecast for any particular publisher.
What the study says about Denuvo and revenue
William M. Volckmann II’s paper, “Revenue effects of Denuvo digital rights management on PC video games,” appeared in Entertainment Computing, volume 52, in January 2025, as article 100885. Its abstract describes Denuvo as PC-game digital rights management used since 2014 and says the study uses variation in when games are cracked to estimate piracy’s effect on revenue.
The central comparison is between estimated revenue with piracy and an uncracked counterfactual. For games whose Denuvo protection is cracked very early, the study estimates an average 20% decrease in total revenue relative to that counterfactual. Across its estimates, it reports that Denuvo protects a mean 15% and median 20% of total revenue from piracy displacement. These are study estimates, not guaranteed sales gains or verified dollar losses for named companies.
Why crack timing matters
The estimated effect declines as a crack is delayed. The abstract says that when Denuvo survives for at least 12 weeks, piracy leads to “nearly zero total revenue loss on average.” “Nearly zero” is not the same as a precisely measured zero, and the finding describes an average rather than every game.

This timing result gives the study’s estimates their practical shape: the launch period appears to matter most in the analysis, while maintaining protection beyond three months has little average revenue-protection rationale according to the author. That is the author’s conclusion from the study, not a universal rule for every publisher or release.
What publishers can—and cannot—infer
What the estimates support
- For the PC games in the study, very early cracks are associated with the largest estimated piracy-related revenue effect.
- The study estimates average protection of 15% of total revenue and median protection of 20% from piracy displacement.
- When protection lasts at least 12 weeks, the estimated average total-revenue loss from piracy is nearly zero.
What the estimates do not establish
- They do not quantify a specific publisher’s losses or predict revenue for a named game.
- They do not establish the effect for console games or the entire video-game market.
- They are not a sales guarantee: the percentages describe estimated effects relative to a counterfactual, not a fixed amount every title will recover.
The abstract also says that game characteristics cannot explain a game’s likelihood of being cracked. That finding should not be broadened into a claim that crack timing is random under every condition or that no other factors matter.

How to weigh a short-term DRM strategy
The paper’s abstract argues there is little justification for using Denuvo long-term—defined there as more than three months—particularly in light of potential technical side effects and user dislike. This is the author’s interpretation of the findings, not a demonstrated outcome for every game. The abstract does not provide the detailed sample construction, operational definitions, data provenance, or robustness checks needed to independently evaluate those methodological details from the abstract alone.
A separate HotHardware report dated October 15, 2024, covering the study, described performance concerns and a poor reputation among some PC gamers. Those are the article’s reports, not performance-test results established by the journal abstract. The study therefore informs the timing and estimated revenue side of a publisher’s decision, but does not settle the technical or customer-experience trade-off for an individual release.
