No. Children under 17 can fish Michigan public waters without a fishing license, but they must follow all fishing rules and regulations. Anyone who is 17 or older needs a license, including someone who turns 17 during the current fishing season.
What is Michigan’s age rule for young anglers?
Michigan’s 2026 fishing regulations set the cutoff at 17: anglers under 17 may fish without a license, while anglers age 17 or older must have one to fish public waters. The exemption applies to the license requirement only; young anglers still have to follow the state’s fishing rules. See the 2026 Michigan Fishing Regulations.
The regulations describe the license requirement as applying when targeting fish, amphibians, crustaceans, and reptiles. The general rule here concerns Michigan public waters; for water governed by a tribal authority or another special jurisdiction, check that authority’s current rules rather than assuming the statewide guidance settles the question.
What if a child turns 17 during the season?
For the 2026 season, Michigan DNR says a person who turns 17 at any time during the season needs a license. The season runs from April 1, 2026, through March 31, 2027, as confirmed in the DNR’s 2026 license announcement. A child approaching 17 should plan to have a license for fishing after turning 17 during this season.

Does a parent or other adult need a license?
An adult’s license status is a separate issue from the child’s exemption. Michigan DNR states that an adult actively assisting a minor must have a fishing license. The regulations allow an unlicensed adult to provide limited help, including setting up gear, baiting a hook, fixing tangles, or helping land or unhook a fish. They also allow an unlicensed adult to cast for the child if the young angler remains an active participant. If the adult will do more than the listed limited assistance, check the regulations and make sure the adult has the required license.
Is Michigan’s youth fishing license required?
No. Michigan offers a voluntary all-species youth fishing license to residents and nonresidents under 17. The DNR’s license information lists it at $2; an under-17 child may also fish without buying it. The DNR lists a $1 Sportcard.
