The charge is not a universal toll for crossing the Canada–U.S. border: it applies when a traveler who needs an I-94 applies at a land border. The fee has been $30 since September 30, 2025, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection says it remains $30 for fiscal year 2027.
Is there a new fee to cross the U.S. border from Canada?
There is no general fee charged to every person crossing the border. The $30 charge is for an I-94 application at a land border, not for crossing itself. A congressional text also bars DHS from imposing a new universal fee on every pedestrian, cyclist, or private-vehicle driver or passenger crossing a northern or southern land border. That prohibition and the I-94 application fee address different things: one concerns a toll on all crossings, the other a charge for a specific immigration application.
Who has to pay the $30 I-94 fee?
Travelers who need an I-94 and apply at a land border are subject to the fee. An I-94 records arrival and departure information and can document the terms of a traveler’s admission. Eligibility depends on the traveler’s status and circumstances; the charge should not be treated as a routine cost for every Canadian visitor.
Most Canadian visitors and people in transit are exempt
USAGov says “Most Canadian citizens who are visiting or in transit” do not need an I-94. That does not mean every Canadian or every trip is exempt; check the official eligibility guidance for your situation before applying. Do not submit an application solely because you have heard about the fee if you are not required to obtain an I-94.

How the $30 land-border amount is made up
CBP’s October 1, 2026 Federal Register notice describes the land-border total as “consisting of the $6 land border fee and the $24 HR-1 fee.” The total rose from $6 to $30 effective September 30, 2025. For fiscal year 2027, CBP says the I-94 total remains $30.
Does the fee apply to air or sea arrivals?
CBP says no I-94 fee is assessed for arrivals at air or sea ports because those travelers are not required to submit an I-94 application there. This is separate from the land-border application process; do not assume the $30 land-arrival fee applies to every way of entering the United States.

How to apply if you need an I-94
USAGov says an eligible traveler may apply at a land port of entry or up to seven days before entry through the official I-94 website or CBP One. Applying online produces a provisional I-94, not permission to enter.
- Check USAGov’s I-94 eligibility guidance to determine whether your status and trip require an application.
- If required, apply at a land port or up to seven days before entry using the official I-94 website or CBP One.
- Pay the applicable fee and keep the application information available for your trip.
- At the border, follow the inspection process. CBP makes the admission decision; an online provisional I-94 does not guarantee entry.
How the I-94 fee compares with other FY2027 charges
Other immigration-related fees also change for fiscal year 2027, but they are not general border-crossing charges. CBP’s October 1, 2026 notice says the adjusted fees below begin October 16, 2026.
