Biofreeze UltraFlex lidocaine patches may temporarily relieve pain when applied to the back, but the label does not say they treat the cause of back pain or work for every kind of back pain. The product contains 4% lidocaine, and its official Drug Facts label describes its use as “For the temporary relief of pain.” The manufacturer lists the back as an application area.
What the patch is—and what its back-pain claim means
Biofreeze UltraFlex is an over-the-counter topical patch with lidocaine 4% as its active ingredient. The current Biofreeze UltraFlex Drug Facts label on DailyMed identifies the use as temporary pain relief. Separately, the manufacturer’s UltraFlex product page lists the back among suggested application areas.
Together, those statements support using the patch on the back for temporary symptomatic relief; they do not establish that it treats an underlying condition, or that it will relieve pain from every cause. The manufacturer also describes the patch as flexible, adhesive and wearable for up to eight hours. Those are product claims, not independent comparative test results.
How to use it according to the label
- Clean and dry the affected area before applying the patch.
- Apply one patch at a time and leave it in place for up to eight hours.
- Use no more than three to four times daily. The directions apply to adults and children 12 years and older; children under 12 should consult a physician.
Important precautions
- Do not apply the patch to wounds, damaged or irritated skin, rashes, or swollen skin.
- Do not use a heating pad or apply local heat over the treated area. Do not tightly bandage the patch.
- Do not use more than one patch on the body at a time or use it alongside another topical anesthetic. Avoid contact with the eyes and mucous membranes.
- Keep used patches away from children and pets. The label warns that patches retain drug product and chewing or ingesting one can cause serious adverse effects.
- Stop use and ask a doctor if the condition persists or worsens, or if a rash, redness, or irritation develops. Follow the package label’s seven-day symptom guidance and instructions for recurring symptoms; consult the complete current label for all warnings, including pregnancy or breastfeeding questions.
UltraFlex is not UltraFlex Plus
The lidocaine-only UltraFlex patch contains lidocaine 4%. Biofreeze UltraFlex Plus is a separate formulation whose DailyMed label lists lidocaine 4% and menthol 1%. Do not assume the Plus ingredients apply to the UltraFlex product discussed here; the available product labels do not establish that either formulation is more effective.
