Do Banks Process Transactions on Holidays? What Happens to Each Payment Type

Sometimes—but submitting a transaction is not the same as having it clear, settle, post to an account, or become available to use. In the United States, many banking apps and payment services still accept instructions on a holiday, while business-day clearing and back-office steps may wait. The result depends on the payment method, the institutions involved, their cutoffs, and the holiday schedule.

What “processed” can mean

A holiday transaction can be at different stages, and a status such as “scheduled” or “pending” does not establish that the recipient’s bank has received settled funds.

  • Initiated: You submit or authorize the payment, for example in an app or on a website.
  • Cleared or settled: The institutions or payment service exchange and reconcile the funds. Some payment rails pause this step on Federal Reserve holidays.
  • Posted: A bank records the transaction in an account. Posting schedules can differ from the time you submit a payment.
  • Available: The account holder can use the funds. Availability is governed by the applicable service and institution rules, not simply by an app confirmation.

The Federal Reserve says clearings associated with Fedwire Funds, Fedwire Securities, the National Settlement Service (NSS), ACH, checks, and cash services do not take place on its standard holidays. That does not mean every digital interface is closed; it means a transaction relying on one of those services may not complete its business-day steps that day. Federal Reserve Financial Accounting Manual, Chapter 6

What happens to each kind of transaction?

Payment type Holiday effect What to check
ACH, including many direct deposits and bill payments Federal Reserve ACH clearing does not take place on standard Federal Reserve holidays. Same-day ACH is possible on business days, but entry on a holiday does not guarantee same-day completion; processing can take days. Whether the instruction is scheduled or submitted, the originator’s cutoff and time zone, and when the bank or biller says it will process the payment.
Checks and check deposits Federal Reserve check clearing pauses on standard Federal Reserve holidays. A mobile-deposit interface may still accept an image, but its availability schedule is set by the institution. The bank’s deposit agreement, cutoff, and funds-availability notice.
Wire transfers Fedwire Funds does not operate on designated holidays under its current schedule. The Federal Reserve announced a planned expansion no earlier than 2028, but that future change is not yet a basis for assuming holiday service. Whether the wire is sent through Fedwire or another service, and the sending and receiving institutions’ hours and cutoffs.
Credit-card payment If the due date falls on a Sunday or holiday, CFPB consumer guidance generally gives the payment until the next business day. The applicable acceptance method and issuer cutoff still matter. The issuer’s payment instructions, cutoff and time zone, and card agreement.

Federal Reserve holiday closures are not a universal calendar for every provider or payment product. A card transaction, person-to-person service, or provider-specific transfer may follow different operating and posting rules; check the terms for that particular service rather than inferring completion from the word “electronic.”

ACH and direct deposit

ACH can clear on the same business day during business hours, but the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) cautions that an ACH payment may take days to complete. A scheduled payment or pending status on a holiday is not proof of settlement. For a direct deposit, confirm the expected deposit date with the payer and the receiving institution; the holiday calendar and their processing schedules can affect when it appears.

Federal Reserve holiday-clearing guidance and the CFPB’s explanation of electronic deposit timing describe different parts of the process: clearing schedules do not by themselves establish the date funds will be available in a particular account.

Checks and deposits

Federal Reserve check clearing does not run on standard Federal Reserve holidays. Separately, CFPB consumer guidance says electronic deposits such as ACH and wire transfers are generally available by the next business day, but the cutoff can shift which business day counts. That general guidance is not a promise about a specific deposit. Mobile check deposits may follow a timetable set by the bank, so read the availability estimate shown by the institution.

Wire transfers

Fedwire Funds currently excludes designated holidays. On October 9, 2025, the Federal Reserve Board announced that it plans to expand Fedwire Funds and NSS operating days to Sundays and weekday holidays no earlier than 2028. Until the Board or service operator confirms implementation, treat this as a future plan. The announced expansion does not apply to Fedwire Securities or Federal Reserve retail services, including FedACH and FedNow. Federal Reserve Board announcement, October 9, 2025

Credit-card payments

CFPB guidance says a credit-card payment due on a Sunday or holiday generally gets until the next business day. It also says issuers generally cannot treat a payment received by 5 p.m. on the due date as late. “Received” and the applicable cutoff depend on the issuer’s accepted payment method and stated time zone; consult your card agreement and issuer instructions rather than assuming that initiating a payment at the deadline is enough. CFPB guidance on Sunday and holiday due dates

Which date counts as a bank holiday?

For the Federal Reserve, the observed date can differ from the date on the calendar. Its holiday calendar says Federal Reserve offices open the preceding Friday when a holiday falls on Saturday, and close the following Monday when a holiday falls on Sunday. Check the applicable year’s Federal Reserve holiday schedule for the observed date and affected services.

The meaning of “business day” also depends on context. Under Regulation E, it means “any day on which the offices of the consumer’s financial institution are open to the public for carrying on substantially all business functions.” The official interpretation includes public and back-office operations. An open website, ATM, or limited-service counter alone does not show that all relevant functions are operating. This Regulation E definition serves its regulatory context; it is not a guarantee that a payment rail will settle that day. CFPB Regulation E, § 1005.2

How to check when your payment will complete

  1. Identify the rail. Check whether the transaction is ACH, a check deposit, a Fedwire wire, a card payment, or another provider’s transfer. Similar-looking app payments can rely on different services.
  2. Separate the stages. Look for whether the transaction is merely scheduled or submitted, or whether the institution confirms it has cleared, posted, or become available.
  3. Check the cutoff and time zone. A submission after a provider’s cutoff may be treated as received on the next business day, even when submitted before midnight.
  4. Check both sides. Confirm the sending institution’s holiday schedule and processing rules, plus the recipient’s bank or biller handling and availability estimate.
  5. For a card bill, verify the issuer’s deadline. Use the accepted payment method and cutoff in the card agreement or issuer instructions, especially if the due date is a Sunday or holiday.

Federal holidays and observed dates are not the only possible exceptions: state holidays, non-U.S. banking schedules, provider rules, and institution-level cutoffs may differ. For a large or time-sensitive payment, arrange it early enough to account for the relevant business-day schedule.
