DMV impersonation texts are circulating in multiple states, and agencies are warning drivers not to follow payment links. The messages often claim you owe a toll or traffic fine and threaten penalties unless you pay immediately. Officials have issued warnings, but the available information does not establish a quantified nationwide increase in DMV-text scams.
Is this DMV text a scam?
It may be. A common scam claims you have an unpaid toll, overdue ticket, or registration fee and urges you to pay through a link. The text may threaten license or registration suspension, prosecution, extra fees, or damage to your credit. The FTC has also described fake “DMV violation database” claims and an added 35% service fee as features of scam messages—not legitimate DMV charges. The FTC’s DMV scam alert explains the pattern.
The link may open a fake payment page built to collect money or personal and financial information. The FTC warns that an unpaid-toll link may request bank or credit-card details; a scammer could also expose or misuse a driver’s-license number. Treat urgent threats and payment links as warning signs, not proof that you owe anything.
Does the DMV text you about unpaid tolls?
There is no single policy for every state agency. Some agencies send limited legitimate messages, such as appointment confirmations, while others say they do not send payment demands or payment links by text. Check your own agency’s published policy rather than assuming every government text is fake—or that a message is genuine because it names your state.

| Agency | What it says about texts | Official verification |
|---|---|---|
| West Virginia DMV | In a March 16, 2026 warning, said fake toll-payment texts were circulating. Commissioner Everett Frazier said, “It’s a scam. Do not click on it. The DMV does not send out texts.” | Use contact information published by the West Virginia DMV, not details in the message. West Virginia DMV warning |
| Iowa DOT | A March 27, 2026 warning said false traffic-violation, toll, and registration-fee messages were impersonating Iowa DOT or “DMV.” Iowa DOT says it does not send fee-collection reminders by text and does not collect tolls on its roads or bridges; it notes that agencies may send limited legitimate messages, such as appointment confirmations. | Log in to Iowa DOT’s system independently instead of following a text link. Iowa DOT warning |
| Texas DMV (TxDMV) | In a March 25, 2026 warning, said it does not issue or collect fines for toll or traffic violations and does not send unsolicited texts about alleged registration violations. | Contact TxDMV using its official website or published phone number. TxDMV warning |
| Connecticut DMV | A March 6, 2026 warning said fraudulent unpaid-citation texts were circulating and that the agency does not send payment demands through text messages. | Verify a citation through Connecticut DMV’s official channels. Connecticut DMV warning |
| California DMV | Says it will never ask for personal or financial information by text and does not send text messages with links to make payments. It notes that some DMV offices may send reminders. | Check California DMV’s guidance and use its official channels to verify an issue. California DMV guidance |
These are agency-specific policies, not a rule for every state. For broader context, the FTC says DMV impersonation messages are extending the unpaid-toll scam pattern. Its unpaid-toll scam guidance explains why an unexpected payment link is risky.
What should you do when you receive one?
- Do not click, reply, or enter information. Don’t use the text’s link, phone number, or other contact details.
- Check independently if you may owe money. Find the agency’s official website or phone number yourself, then ask whether there is a real toll, ticket, or registration issue. Follow the agency’s published policy for checking balances.
- Report and remove the message. Use your phone’s “report junk” feature or forward the text to 7726 (SPAM), then delete it. You can also report a scam to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
Reporting is worthwhile beyond the individual message: the FTC reported that consumers lost $470 million to scams that started with text messages in 2024—five times the amount consumers reported losing in 2020. That figure covers text-message scams overall, not DMV scams specifically, and is not an estimate of DMV-scam losses. FTC data released in April 2025 also lists fake unpaid-toll payment texts among frequently reported text scams.

What if you clicked the link?
Clicking alone does not establish that your information was stolen. If you entered payment or personal details, contact the relevant bank, card issuer, or agency using a phone number or website you find independently. Tell them what information you submitted and ask what protective steps they recommend. If you downloaded anything or gave additional account credentials, explain that as well when seeking help. Do not return to the text’s link to investigate or resolve the issue.
