In remarks reported after his appearance on CNN’s African Voices Changemakers, he called himself underpaid and tied his experience to racism and Hollywood’s slow progress on diversity. The reports do not disclose his earnings or independently establish the causes of his financial circumstances.
What Djimon Hounsou said about his finances
Channels Television quoted Hounsou as saying: “I’m still struggling to make a living. I’ve been in the filmmaking business for over two decades with two Oscar nominations and many blockbuster films, and yet, I’m still struggling financially. I’m definitely underpaid.” Channels Television’s January 11, 2025 report attributes those words to Hounsou.
He set the remarks against a career that includes films such as Amistad, Blood Diamond and Gladiator. His comments describe his own experience; they are not a public accounting of his income, expenses, assets or contracts.
How he connected his experience to racism and diversity
Hounsou also spoke about racism and the limits of diversity efforts in Hollywood. Channels Television quoted him saying: “This conceptual idea of diversity still has a long way to go. Systemic racism won’t change like that anytime soon.” His account links his sense of being underpaid to broader industry concerns, but the available reports do not independently demonstrate that racism caused his personal financial difficulties or quantify pay disparities across Hollywood.
