At a rally in Syracuse, New York, on October 9, 2026, President Donald Trump said the United States, represented by him, should have received the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. He called the decision “disgraceful and embarrassing” and an “indelible stain” on Norway. The prize went to South African jurist Navi Pillay.

What Trump said about the Nobel Peace Prize

Trump addressed the award at the Syracuse rally after the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize announcement. The Washington Post and AP reported that he said: “The United States of America, represented by me as your president, should have received the Nobel Peace Prize but didn’t. And this is an indelible stain on the country of Norway and those people that made such a disgraceful and embarrassing decision.”

He also said he had never heard of Pillay. In later social-media posts, Trump claimed he deserved eight Nobel Peace Prizes because he had settled eight wars and was about to settle or win two more, according to The Washington Post’s October 10 report. That count is Trump’s claim, not an independently established tally: the report said some conflicts he described as settled continued, while others were ended largely by people other than Trump. It did not provide a complete conflict-by-conflict accounting.

Who won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize?

Navi Pillay, a South African jurist and former U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, received the 2026 prize. Reporting described the committee’s rationale as recognizing her work to promote peace and international law and to hold states and world leaders accountable. Committee chair Jørgen Watne Frydnes said the prize honors a person who advances a more comprehensive global legal order, which he linked to the possibility of a more peaceful society. His remarks were reported by The Washington Post.

Pillay’s legal and human-rights work

Associated Press reported that Pillay defended anti-apartheid activists, headed an international tribunal investigating the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, served as a judge of the International Criminal Court, and led a U.N. commission that concluded Israel had committed genocide in Gaza. Israel rejects that conclusion. AP also reported that Pillay is an ad hoc judge at the International Court of Justice in a case concerning allegations of genocide against Myanmar’s Rohingya. These details provide context for her career; they are not a claim that every party agrees with her work or the commission’s findings.

Does Norway’s government choose the Nobel Peace Prize winner?

No. The Norwegian Nobel Committee selects the Peace Prize winner and is independent of Norway’s government, according to The Washington Post. Frydnes said the committee’s mandate is to honor the criteria in Alfred Nobel’s will. Trump’s criticism of “Norway” therefore targets the country, but the award decision is made by the committee, not the Norwegian government.

How did others react to Pillay’s award?

The award prompted sharply different responses. AP reported praise from human-rights and international-justice advocates, as well as criticism from Israeli officials and supporters. Those are attributed reactions to the award, not a consensus about Pillay’s record or the committee’s decision. U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres praised the award as “a tribute to all those working to uphold and defend international law, the rule of law and human rights, and secure peace, justice and human dignity,” AP reported.
