To earn the bonus, activate that quarter’s offer and make eligible purchases with a qualifying transaction date during the offer period. The 5% rate applies to up to $1,500 in purchases per quarter—up to $75 in bonus cash back.
For the quarter running October 1 through December 31, 2026, the categories are restaurants, entertainment, and utilities. Eligibility depends on Discover’s terms and how the merchant processes the transaction.
What are Discover’s 5% categories for 2026?
The calendar applies to Discover it and Discover More cardmembers. Each quarter has its own categories and dates:

Discover’s official 2026 5% Cash Back Calendar gives the current categories and offer terms. The calendar can change, so check it for the quarter in which you plan to use the card.

How to activate Discover 5% cash back
- Check the categories and dates on Discover’s official calendar.
- Activate the offer for that quarter through your Discover online account or app, or by calling Discover. The offer begins on the later of the quarter’s start date or the date you activate.
- Use the card for planned purchases that fit the categories, and track eligible spending against the $1,500 quarterly limit.
- For purchases near the quarter’s end, check the transaction date and merchant details when they appear on your account.
Activation is required every quarter; an eligible purchase made before activation does not earn the quarterly bonus under the offer terms. Discover suggests setting a reminder for the category switch; see its consumer guide to maximizing the calendar.
How to maximize the bonus without overspending
The 5% rate applies to up to $1,500 in eligible purchases per quarter. Reaching that cap would produce up to $75 in bonus cash back for the quarter. Treat the cap as a limit, not a spending target: plan around purchases you would make anyway, and route them to an eligible category when practical.

- Review the category list at the start of each quarter and note the end date.
- Use the remaining cap for purchases you already expect, rather than buying extra items to chase the full bonus.
- Keep track of eligible purchases as they post so you know how much of the quarterly limit remains.
- Leave a margin for late-quarter orders: an online transaction may use the merchant-reported date, which can be the shipping date.
Discover’s general rewards information says cardmembers continue earning cash back on other purchases, and its standard overview describes 1% on purchases outside the rotating 5% program. A purchase’s apparent purpose does not guarantee that it will qualify. Discover says eligibility can depend on the merchant category code, which the merchant reports; Discover does not assign that code. A purchase at a business that seems to match a listed category may therefore be classified differently.

- Merchant coding: The merchant’s category code may not match the calendar category.
- Transaction timing: Purchases must have a qualifying transaction date on or before the final day of the offer. For online orders, the merchant-reported date may be the ship date rather than the date you placed the order.
- Payment intermediaries: Some third-party payment accounts and digital wallets may not pass enough transaction information or a qualifying code for the bonus.
- Category-specific exclusions: Some restaurant transactions inside hotels or retail stores may not qualify. Contractor purchases at home-improvement stores may also be excluded.
The calendar’s program details apply to U.S. merchants. Review the current quarter’s full terms for category-specific exclusions before relying on a purchase to qualify.

- Confirm that you activated the quarter’s offer before the purchase.
- Check the posted transaction date against the offer dates, particularly for online orders placed near quarter-end.
- Review the merchant and payment method; a category code or intermediary may prevent the transaction from qualifying.
- Compare your eligible purchases with the remaining $1,500 quarterly limit and review the category-specific terms.
- If the transaction still appears eligible, contact Discover through the support options on your account and ask how it was classified.
