DISA Global Solutions reported that an unauthorized party accessed part of its systems between February 9 and April 22, 2024. The company’s Maine breach filing lists 3,332,750 affected people, but it does not establish that 3.3 million complete background checks were stolen. Potentially affected people may have undergone screening through a current, former or prospective employer without ever dealing with DISA directly.
What happened in the DISA Global Solutions breach?
DISA Global Solutions, Inc., a Houston-based employment-screening provider, said an unauthorized party accessed part of its environment. The company discovered the incident on April 22, 2024, contained it and began an investigation with outside forensic experts. Who is DISA, and who could be affected?
DISA Global Solutions is a private employment-screening company, not the U.S. Defense Information Systems Agency. It offers background checks, drug and alcohol testing, occupational-health services and transportation compliance screening. DISA’s background-check services
Its relationship with many people is indirect: an employer, recruiter or prospective employer may have sent information to DISA as part of a screening process. DISA’s notice says information came into its possession through screening completed with a current, former or prospective employer. What information may have been exposed?
DISA’s notice names several possible data categories. It also says the investigation could not definitively determine which specific information was procured for each person, so the list is not a person-by-person inventory.

DISA handles different types of screening, and secondary reporting describes services that can involve employment or education history, criminal-record information, credit information, drug-testing data and health-related information. Does the Fortune 500 connection identify affected employers?
DISA says it serves more than 55,000 enterprises and that about 30% of Fortune 500 companies use its services, according to Recorded Future News. That is a company-reported measure of customer reach, not evidence that employees at any named company were included in the breach. Recorded Future News / The Record
The available notices do not identify which Fortune 500 customers, if any, had affected workers. A company’s use of DISA does not establish that every employee or applicant at that company was part of the affected population. For a specific case, look for a company-specific notice or ask the employer that ordered the screening.

DISA said an unauthorized third party accessed its environment and “procured some information,” but its investigation could not definitively determine the specific data obtained for each person. The notices do not establish that complete background-check files were taken, that records were publicly posted or sold, or that the information was used for identity theft.

The published notices show different Experian assistance terms. The Maine record lists 12 months of credit monitoring and identity-theft protection. The Massachusetts sample notice describes 24 months of credit monitoring and identity-restoration services, with an enrollment deadline of June 30, 2025. The difference may reflect different notices or recipients; neither term should be assumed to apply universally. The Massachusetts deadline has passed.
Check the original letter or email addressed to you for the offer and its terms. Do not rely on a generic enrollment code or an unofficial third-party site. What should you do if you may be affected?
- Find your notice or check with the employer. Search email and postal mail for “DISA Global Solutions,” “Notice of Data Incident” or Experian enrollment information. If DISA is unfamiliar, ask the current, former or prospective employer that ordered your screening which vendor it used, whether it used DISA for your application or test, and whether you were included in this incident.
- Review your credit reports. Use AnnualCreditReport.com, the federally authorized source, to look for unfamiliar accounts, hard inquiries, addresses, employers or collection activity.
- Consider freezing your credit. Place a separate freeze with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. A freeze can make it harder to open new credit in your name. You may need to lift it temporarily when applying for credit, housing, insurance or employment-related services.
- Secure online accounts. Change passwords that you reused and enable multifactor authentication where available. Be alert to messages about a background check, job application, drug test, payroll problem or identity verification.
- Watch for tax and government-benefit fraud. If a Social Security number was involved, pay attention to unfamiliar tax, unemployment or benefits activity. Use official government websites rather than links in unsolicited messages.
- Report suspected identity theft. If you find evidence of fraud, use the Federal Trade Commission’s IdentityTheft.gov recovery service. Keep copies of notices, suspicious transactions, correspondence and dispute confirmations.
Credit freeze, fraud alert and monitoring: what is the difference?

Could the breach affect employment or privacy?
A breach notice does not by itself mean an employer will change a background-check result or take action against a worker. However, if a person believes sensitive screening information was exposed or used in a way that caused employment-related harm, the relevant facts may depend on the data involved, state law, the Fair Credit Reporting Act and the agreements among the employer and screening provider. Preserve relevant documents and consider speaking with a qualified attorney or the appropriate regulator.
Be especially cautious of follow-up messages that ask you to reverify a Social Security number, pay to release a report, install remote-access software, or act urgently on a payroll, drug-testing or job offer claim. Verify requests independently through your employer or the contact information on an authentic notice.
