A director of data analytics leads the people, priorities and systems that turn organizational data into better decisions. The job combines business judgment, analytical and technical fluency, communication, team leadership and accountability for reliable data. Its scope and qualifications vary by employer: some roles focus on a business unit or specialist operation, while others span enterprise data strategy and AI.

What does a director of data analytics do?

The director’s job is not simply to produce reports. It is to shape an analytics function around decisions the organization needs to make: identify useful questions with stakeholders, define meaningful measures, direct analysis and reporting, and communicate findings in a form people can act on.

Duke University Health System’s job description, revised November 1, 2024, says the director has “the primary responsibility for building the analytics function for an area of the health system.” Its responsibilities include working with departments and executives to identify needs, defining metrics, maintaining data and databases, and delivering reporting and analytical products. The description also covers self-service reporting, benchmarking, predictive models, data quality and coaching users on interpreting metrics. Duke University Health System job description

In practice, the role often connects organizational priorities to a portfolio of analytics work. The director helps decide which questions deserve attention, what evidence is needed, who will deliver it, and how results should influence decisions. Depending on the employer, the remit can also include data governance, engineering, privacy, or AI products.

Core skills the role requires

Business judgment and prioritization

A director must translate goals into answerable questions, useful measures and a manageable work plan. That means weighing potential impact against effort and capacity, and explaining why some requests should take priority over others. Duke’s description emphasizes identifying analytics needs with departments and executives; NetApp’s enterprise listing connects data strategy with products and organizational change. Analytical and statistical fluency

The director needs enough command of methods and measurement to assess whether an analysis answers the question, whether the data are fit for use, and how much confidence a decision-maker should place in the result. Duke specifically calls for a good statistical background and describes work such as benchmarking, trend analysis and barrier analysis. The role is not necessarily the most hands-on analyst on the team, but it does require sound judgment about evidence and interpretation.

Technical breadth

Depending on the organization, the director may guide work involving SQL, databases, data cleaning, reproducible workflows, programming, business-intelligence tools, cloud platforms, data architecture or AI and machine learning. Required hands-on depth varies with team structure: a director may personally work with data in a lean group or primarily set direction and review work in a larger function.

The variation is visible in employer examples. A New York City Administration for Children’s Services posting, which closed May 7, 2025, sought SQL, data cleaning and analysis, reproducible workflows, version control, legacy-system experience, BI visualization and geospatial analysis for a child-welfare policy and operations context. Communication and influence

Analytics only has value when people understand what it says and how it bears on a decision. Directors need to explain findings clearly to executives and nontechnical colleagues, surface uncertainty, build alignment across functions, and help users interpret metrics correctly. That may involve presentations, written recommendations, metric definitions or direct coaching.

People and delivery leadership

The director sets expectations for a team’s work, coordinates multiple projects, coaches colleagues and sustains dependable delivery. Leadership also includes managing change: introducing new measures or processes can affect how teams work, so the director needs to build understanding and adoption rather than simply publish a new dashboard.

Data quality and governance

Reliable analysis depends on accurate, accessible and appropriately managed data. Directors may establish standards, stewardship practices and lifecycle controls, or coordinate with teams that own them. In regulated settings and AI-heavy programs, the remit may extend to privacy and responsible-use controls. NetApp’s listing includes governance, semantic data structures, responsible AI and privacy as part of its particular enterprise data-and-AI scope. NetApp Director, Data & AI listing

How the job varies across employers

“Director of data analytics” is not one standardized job. Compare the actual decision rights and responsibilities in a posting rather than relying on the title alone.

Context What the example emphasizes What it suggests about the remit
Duke University Health System Building an analytics function for a health-system area; departmental and executive partnership; metrics, reporting, data quality, benchmarking and predictive models. An operational function that supports decisions and develops analytics capability within a defined part of a large institution. Source
New York City Administration for Children’s Services Child-welfare policy and operations, with SQL, reproducible analysis, BI visualization and geospatial work among the listed capabilities. A specialist public-sector role tied to a particular policy domain. The posting closed May 7, 2025, so it is a historical example, not a current vacancy. Source

When assessing an opportunity, look for the practical scope behind the title:

  • How much authority does the director have over strategy and decisions?
  • What is the team size, and does the director hire, coach or manage performance?
  • Is there budget ownership?
  • How hands-on is the technical work?
  • Does the role own data engineering, governance and quality, or coordinate with separate teams?
  • How much executive access and influence does it provide?
  • What industry or policy expertise is necessary?

What qualifications are expected?

There is no single education or experience threshold established for all director of data analytics roles. Individual employers set their own requirements according to the scale, industry and technical scope of the position.

  • Duke University Health System: Its 2024 description lists a related BA/BS, says a master’s is strongly preferred, and requires seven years of work experience, including five years with significant responsibility for performance or process improvement. Duke University Health System job description
  • NetApp: Its Director, Data & AI listing, accessed October 8, 2026, asks for 10+ years of progressive experience in data, analytics, business intelligence and AI/ML. NetApp listing

These are employer-specific requirements, not a market-wide rule. 1. Strengthen business framing: Practice turning broad goals into specific questions, measures and decision options.
  2. Maintain analytical credibility: Develop enough statistical and measurement fluency to evaluate methods, data quality, uncertainty and interpretation.
  3. Broaden technical understanding: Learn the tools and systems relevant to your target setting, such as SQL, databases, BI, data workflows or AI/ML. Aim for depth that fits the expected level of hands-on work.
  4. Demonstrate influence: Show how you have explained evidence, aligned stakeholders and helped teams use metrics in decisions.
  5. Build leadership experience: Seek responsibility for project delivery, coaching, prioritization and change management.
  6. Learn governance in context: Understand the data quality, privacy and stewardship responsibilities that apply to the industry and systems you hope to lead.

When reviewing a role, match your experience to its stated scope rather than treating a director title as evidence of a uniform career ladder. An operational analytics function, public-sector specialist team and enterprise data-and-AI organization may need substantially different combinations of expertise.
