Career and humanitarian work
Mutombo played 18 NBA seasons and became the league’s first global ambassador after his playing career, according to the NBA’s 2009 announcement: NBA names Dikembe Mutombo global ambassador. The Associated Press reported that he was an eight-time All-Star, averaged 9.8 points and 10.3 rebounds per game, and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2015: Associated Press obituary. These accomplishments help explain his prominence, but do not verify a wealth estimate.
Mutombo’s humanitarian work is also part of his legacy. The NCAA says his foundation was created in 1997: NCAA remembrance. Mutombo’s death
The NBA said Mutombo died at age 58 on September 30, 2024, after brain cancer. In the league’s statement, Commissioner Adam Silver said, “Dikembe Mutombo was simply larger than life.” NBA statement on Mutombo’s death
