DigitalOcean announced its Singapore datacenter, SGP1, on January 29, 2014, and described it as a response to demand in Asia. The location gives customers a DigitalOcean deployment option in Singapore, but its presence alone does not establish performance gains, service availability for every product, or company-wide growth.
When did DigitalOcean open its Singapore region?
DigitalOcean’s investor announcement dated January 29, 2014 said its Singapore datacenter, SGP1, had opened. The company said it was expanding to meet rising demand in Asia and improve connectivity for users across Asia-Pacific and nearby markets, including India and Australia. Read the announcement.
In a February 10, 2014 blog post, DigitalOcean said the Singapore location was open and named Equinix as its facility partner. The company described lower latency as an intended benefit for users in Southeast Asia and nearby regions; the sources provide no independent latency measurements. Read DigitalOcean’s blog post.
What does SGP1 mean for customers?
SGP1 is DigitalOcean’s Singapore datacenter location. It can be relevant if you want to deploy a supported DigitalOcean product closer to users in Southeast Asia. Geographic proximity may help reduce network delay, but actual latency depends on the user, network route, product, and workload; DigitalOcean’s 2014 statements are rationale and expected benefits, not a performance guarantee.

Having a datacenter in Singapore does not mean every DigitalOcean product is offered there. Check the current regional availability matrix for the specific product before planning a deployment. Availability can change.
Does Singapore mean better reliability or company growth?
A deployment in Singapore may help distribute an application closer to regional users, but a second location by itself does not provide tested failover or guarantee resilience. Those outcomes depend on how an application is architected and operated; the cited launch materials do not report failover tests.

The launch announcement documents an infrastructure expansion, not a measured increase in revenue, customers, or overall company growth. DigitalOcean CEO Ben Uretsky said in the 2014 announcement, “We have a large customer base in Asia, which will only increase with this announcement.” That was a forecast at launch, not a current growth statistic.

DigitalOcean’s current official pages report different totals. Its regional availability documentation, last verified September 24, 2026, lists 16 datacenters across 13 regions. Its Global Infrastructure page, reviewed September 30, 2026, says 20 distributed data centers in 12 regions. The available pages do not explain the difference, so the figures should be treated as separately attributed company-reported counts rather than combined. Both identify Singapore as a location.

The Global Infrastructure page also reports 640,000 customers and support for customers in 190 countries. It states a 99.99% uptime SLA for Droplets and Volumes block storage; that scope should not be extended to every DigitalOcean service. How to check whether Singapore is the right location
- Confirm product support: consult DigitalOcean’s regional availability page and verify that the product you need is listed for SGP1.
- Consider where your users are: Singapore may be a sensible location for a Southeast Asia audience, but the launch announcement does not supply latency benchmarks for your users or application.
- Plan distribution separately: if you need resilience across datacenters or regions, design and test replication and failover rather than assuming a regional location provides them automatically.
- Check live service status: DigitalOcean’s status page lists Singapore and SGP1. It is a live operational page, not an uptime guarantee.
