Stored diesel is not guaranteed to remain usable indefinitely, and the available evidence here does not establish a current shortage in any particular area. Cummins gives a general estimate of six to twelve months under normal conditions, but fuel quality depends on the blend, storage conditions, contamination, tank condition, and the equipment maker’s guidance. Use reliable storage and maintenance practices, and check local suppliers or official notices for current availability.
How long does diesel fuel last in storage?
Cummins estimates that diesel fuel generally has a shelf life of six to twelve months under normal conditions, while extreme conditions can shorten it. This is manufacturer guidance, not an expiry date or guarantee for every fuel blend, container, or tank. Longer storage also gives contaminants more time to enter the fuel.
Ask your fuel supplier and the engine or generator manufacturer for advice specific to your fuel and equipment. If the fuel’s quality is uncertain—especially when it is intended for critical backup equipment—contact a qualified fuel service or testing provider rather than assuming it is safe to use.
Does diesel go bad, and what can contaminate it?
Diesel can become unsuitable for use as its quality changes or contaminants enter the storage system. Cummins identifies water, microorganisms, wax, hard particles, debris, and sediment as common contaminants. The condition of the tank matters as well as the age of the fuel.

Water collecting at the bottom of an underground storage tank (UST) is a particular maintenance concern. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says regular water checks and removal are widely recognized ways to help reduce corrosion risk. A qualified servicing company can check a system, remove water, examine components, and may perform functionality testing; regular water and fuel testing may also be an option.
Why should underground diesel tanks be checked?
In a 2016 EPA study, 83 percent of 42 diesel USTs examined showed moderate or severe corrosion of internal metal components. EPA cautions that neither it nor industry can project the nationwide share from that sample. The finding concerns the underground tanks studied; it should not be applied to household cans or aboveground tanks.

For UST operators, inspection and maintenance are more useful than judging fuel by age alone. EPA recommends checking for corrosion and making repairs where needed. For water removal, examination, or testing, ask a qualified service provider about the tank and fuel involved.
How should diesel be stored safely?
Choose storage based on the fuel’s intended use, the equipment maker’s requirements, the type and volume of tank, exposure to heat and water, and the inspection or testing the system needs. Keep storage and handling consistent with the tank and container instructions, and use fuel only when its quality is suitable for the intended engine or generator.

Storage laws are not one-size-fits-all. The cited rules below address particular workplace, farm, or national settings—not a universal household quantity or rule.
Workplaces and construction sites in the United States
OSHA’s general-industry flammable-liquids standard includes provisions for approved containers, storage cabinets, and indoor storage rooms. OSHA’s construction standard requires approved containers for covered handling and prohibits storing flammable liquids in exits, stairways, or normally used safe passageways. Which provision applies depends on the setting, fuel classification, quantity, and container.

In a June 9, 2000 interpretation tied to a construction-site rule, OSHA treated common grades of diesel as flammable liquid because their flash points are below 140°F. The interpretation discusses a fire-extinguisher distance of 25 to 75 feet from outdoor flammable-liquid storage under the cited standard. That dated, rule-specific guidance is not a universal household instruction; check the current requirements that apply to your site.
Farms in the United States
EPA’s farm Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) FAQ describes thresholds that include more than 1,320 gallons of aboveground oil storage across containers of at least 55 gallons, or more than 42,000 gallons completely buried. Applicability conditions and exceptions matter, so these figures are not a general safe-storage limit or a rule for every farm.

Agricultural storage in England
Separate UK guidance applies to agricultural fuel-oil storage over 1,500 litres in England. It is England-specific and should not be treated as a rule for other UK nations or jurisdictions.
