A 2021 estimate attributed to Argentine journalist Julio Chiappetta put it at $75 million to $100 million, but that is a reported estimate—not an audited calculation of his wealth or the value of his estate.
What was Diego Maradona’s net worth?
The most defensible answer is that Maradona’s exact net worth is unknown. Forbes Colombia reported in 2020 that there were no official data on his fortune. The figures published elsewhere are estimates, and the available reports do not establish a final accounting of his assets and liabilities.
Why the reported figures differ
| Figure | What it describes | Source and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| $75 million–$100 million | Reported net-worth estimate | The Indian Express, 2021, attributed the estimate to Argentine journalist Julio Chiappetta. It does not provide an audited calculation. |
| About $500 million | Reported career earnings | Forbes Colombia, 2020, and The Indian Express, 2021, refer to outside estimates. This is not a verified net-worth or estate-value figure. |
Career earnings measure money earned over a career, generally before accounting for spending, taxes, debts, investments or other financial obligations. Net worth is the value of assets minus liabilities at a particular point in time. Estate value is a separate question: it concerns property and rights held by the deceased and subject to the succession process, along with relevant claims and obligations. The reported $500 million career-earnings figure therefore does not show that Maradona was worth $500 million when he died.
Why the estate is difficult to value
Reports on the succession describe disputes involving brands, accounts, vehicles, debts and claims. A December 2020 TN report quoted lawyer Mauricio D’Alessandro as saying that no properties were in the succession estate. That is an attributed statement, not an independently verified inventory of everything Maradona owned or controlled.
#1 Best Overall
The succession status was also reported as evolving. In March 2021, Agencia Noticias Argentinas reported that a judge identified five recognized children—Dalma, Gianinna, Jana, Diego Junior and Dieguito Fernando—as heirs at that stage. The report noted that the declaration could be expanded if another claimant proved parentage; it should not be read as a definitive account of every later claim.
Collectibles and intellectual-property rights add further complexity, but an item connected to Maradona is not automatically proof of the estate’s overall value. In 2024, the Associated Press reported that his heirs lost a court effort to block the auction of his Golden Ball trophy. That dispute concerns the trophy auction and does not establish the value or provenance of other items.

What the trademark case does—and does not—establish
On April 29, 2026, EFE reported that an Argentine court ordered a case against former lawyer Matías Morla, two of Maradona’s sisters and others to proceed to trial over alleged fraud concerning the usufruct of Maradona’s trademarks and the rights of legitimate heirs. These are allegations, not findings of guilt. The case underscores that commercial rights and succession claims are contested; it does not establish a final value for those rights or for Maradona’s estate.
