The available reporting does not establish that Laura Van Winkle was left “penniless,” and it does not show that a court made such a finding. Reports about Vanilla Ice’s divorce describe her requests for support and claims over marital assets and financial records—not proof that she had no money or that assets were concealed. The reported income and royalty figures are also dated, attributed figures rather than a verified account of what he earns today.

What the divorce coverage actually reported

Entertainment Tonight reported that Laura Van Winkle filed for divorce in Palm Beach, Florida, in October 2016, after the couple married in 1997. According to ET, her filing sought a parenting plan, exclusive use and permanent ownership of the couple’s Florida home, and spousal and child support. Those were requests made in a filing; the report does not establish that a court granted them. ET described the requested parenting arrangement as allowing her to “spend the majority of the time” with the children. Entertainment Tonight’s 2016 report

The Atlantic’s 2026 retrospective describes the marriage—to Laura Giaritta—as lasting from 1997 to 2019. That supports saying the marriage ended in 2019, but it does not disclose the terms of a property division or settlement. The Atlantic’s retrospective

What Laura reportedly alleged about assets

In February 2018, The Blast reported that Laura alleged marital assets or funds had been placed in Van Rap, Ltd. or titled in Ice’s name. The report said she sought records and an accounting, and asked for an order to prevent further transfers. It attributed to her allegations and documents the claim that Van Rap held at least a dozen properties, and that a Florida property had sold for $3.8 million. These are reported allegations and figures—not an independently assessed account of the couple’s wealth or a court finding that assets were hidden. The Blast’s report on the asset dispute

TMZ separately reported Laura’s request to block further sales of shared assets and obtain an accounting of proceeds from jet skis. It also reported her request that Ice pay for repairs to a Florida home. Such requests help explain the financial dispute, but do not show that she had no assets or that a court accepted her claims. Why the reported income and royalty figures do not settle the question

The financial figures circulating in coverage refer to different measures, sources, and claims. They should not be added together or treated as a current balance sheet.

Reported figure What the source says it represents How to read it
About $68,000 a month in average income Celebrity Net Worth’s account of figures in 2018 divorce filings A secondary site’s description of filing figures, not an independently verified or current income figure. Celebrity Net Worth
About $400,000 a year from “Ice Ice Baby” royalties Celebrity Net Worth’s account of figures in the same 2018 filing context A reported royalty figure, not a current royalty statement or proof of the amount Ice personally retained. Celebrity Net Worth
$825,000 a year TMZ reported that Laura asserted this was Ice’s annual income in 2018 An attributed assertion, distinct from the monthly average reported elsewhere; the available coverage does not reconcile the two. TMZ
About 15 properties, eight cars, a boat, $3 million in liquid assets, and a claimed minimum $10 million net worth Celebrity Net Worth’s summary of figures it attributes to 2018 filings Reported filing details, not a present-day balance sheet; the site notes that real-estate valuation could change the total. Celebrity Net Worth

Older reporting also complicates the idea that gross song royalties equal Ice’s personal income. In a 1998 Washington Post profile, Ice described himself as an investor in Death Row Records and said he had received no return on an investment of “about 3 or 4 million.” The Post also reported that Suge Knight denied Ice’s allegations about how royalty points were transferred. This historical account does not establish today’s royalty split or what Ice received from the song during the divorce. The Washington Post’s 1998 profile

What is—and is not—established about “penniless”

The word “penniless” is a headline characterization, not a verified quote from Laura in the reporting cited here. The available reports describe support requests, contested property claims, and efforts to obtain financial records. They do not document a court finding that she was penniless, establish that she had no money, or reveal the final division of assets. Without the underlying court record or settlement terms, a stronger conclusion would go beyond what these reports support.
