No. PerthNow reported on 19 October 2024 that gold prospector and Gold Rush personality Tyler Mahoney had acquired a haul of gold nuggets valued at around $85,000—but she said she purchased them rather than finding them herself. The figure is an approximate value reported by PerthNow, not a documented appraisal or sale price.
What happened with Tyler Mahoney’s gold nuggets?
In its 19 October 2024 report, PerthNow described Mahoney as a gold prospector and dealer who shared details of a nugget haul said to be worth around $85,000. The report’s headline used “hits the motherload,” but that wording should not be read as evidence that Mahoney personally discovered these particular nuggets: PerthNow says she admitted she had bought them.
What does the $85,000 figure mean?
It is the approximate value PerthNow attached to the purchased haul in 2024. The report does not give the nuggets’ weights, explain how their value was calculated, identify an appraisal, or state that they sold for that amount. It is therefore best understood as a reported estimate, not a verified current valuation or confirmed sale proceeds.
What did Mahoney say about prospecting?
PerthNow attributed remarks to Mahoney about the unpredictable rhythm of looking for gold. She said, “In the gold game, it’s either baked beans or lobster,” and described going “weeks, months without a good patch or a good haul” before a productive stretch. She also said that smaller finds between strong patches can provide income, while one especially good patch is a bonus.

- High Sensitivity for Gold Detection: The Fisher Gold Bug 2 operates at an industry-leading frequency of 71 kHz, making it exceptionally sensitive to detecting small and deep gold nuggets, even in highly mineralized soils. Its ability to locate gold in challenging environments sets it apart as a top-tier choice for professional and amateur prospectors alike.
- Versatile Coil Combination for Varied Terrains: This model includes a 6-inch elliptical search coil for precision in tight, hard-to-reach areas and a 10-inch elliptical coil for broader ground coverage and increased depth. Both coils are engineered with waterproof designs and feature 100% ESI shielding to reduce interference, ensuring accurate and stable performance across diverse hunting conditions.
- Advanced Ground Balance and Mineralization Adjustments: Equipped with a manual 16-turn ground balance control and a three-position mineralization switch, the Gold Bug 2 allows users to fine-tune performance for optimal results in high, normal, or low mineralization soils. This capability enhances the detector’s effectiveness in extreme environments, including areas with black sand and hot rocks.
- Enhanced Target Identification and Signal Clarity: The integrated iron discrimination mode helps users filter out ferrous trash, such as nails and hot rocks, while focusing on non-ferrous targets like gold. Additionally, the audio boost mode amplifies faint signals from deep or small targets without increasing the volume of larger, shallow items, ensuring precise and efficient detecting.
- Lightweight and Ergonomic Design for Prolonged Use: Weighing only 2.9 lbs., the Gold Bug 2 is designed for comfort and ease of use during long detecting sessions. The hip-mountable control housing reduces arm fatigue, while the cushioned armrest and foam grip handle provide additional support. Its double-locking fiberglass-reinforced lower stem ensures durability and stability in rugged conditions.
