Did TSMC Raise Prices on Nvidia? What the Chairman Actually Said

TSMC chairman C.C. Wei discussed sharing higher costs with customers in 2024, but no Nvidia-specific increase was announced. Reuters later reported possible customer-dependent increases from 2027, which TSMC did not confirm.

No Nvidia-specific price increase was announced. The headline comes from comments TSMC chairman C.C. Wei made in June 2024 about showing Nvidia the value of TSMC’s manufacturing work and asking customers to share higher costs. A separate Reuters report in July 2026 described possible TSMC price increases beginning in 2027, but did not confirm a rate for Nvidia.

What Wei said about Nvidia in 2024

In a June 10, 2024 report, TechSpot said Wei told Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang that Nvidia’s products were expensive, while acknowledging their value. Wei said, “I think those products are really valuable for sure, but I am thinking about showing [him] our value as well.” He also said TSMC expected customers to share some higher costs and that discussions had started: “We expect our customers to share some of the higher cost with us, and we already started our discussion with our customers.” TechSpot’s report is the source for these reported remarks.

TSMC later characterized its approach as “strategy-oriented rather than opportunity-oriented.” That is a statement about its pricing approach, not an announcement that Nvidia would pay a particular amount more. The remarks do not disclose Nvidia’s contract terms or establish that it accepted a higher rate.

How the 2024 remarks differ from 2026 price reporting

Reuters reported in July 2026 that TSMC planned increases of up to 10% starting in 2027, citing two unnamed sources familiar with the matter. The reported increases depended on the customer and product. Reuters said negotiations began in June and concluded in July; TSMC did not confirm the figures and said it does not comment on pricing.

Wei’s June 2024 comments Wei’s remarks about Nvidia and TSMC’s value, alongside discussions about customers sharing higher costs. Public remarks reported by TechSpot. TSMC’s stated approach was strategic rather than opportunistic; no Nvidia-specific increase was announced. TechSpot
Reported increases from 2027 Customer- and product-dependent TSMC price increases, reportedly up to 10%. Reuters cited two unnamed sources. TSMC did not confirm the reported figures, and Reuters did not identify an Nvidia contract rate. Reuters

The two stories should not be treated as confirmation of each other: the 2024 story concerns Wei’s Nvidia-specific remarks, while Reuters’ 2026 account describes reported changes that vary by customer and product.

Why TSMC is discussing higher prices

Demand and costs are part of the context, but neither tells readers what Nvidia pays. Quartz reported in July 2026 that Wei described AI demand as high and said it would be a long time before TSMC could meet customer demand. Quartz also said he wanted to raise prices while distinguishing TSMC’s approach from abrupt increases in the memory sector. Quartz’s account does not disclose Nvidia’s contract terms.

In June 2026, The Next Web reported that TSMC CFO Wendell Huang told the BBC inflation had increased costs and that TSMC reflects its value. That report is further context for broader pricing discussions, not evidence of a specific Nvidia price change.

What Nvidia’s support does—and does not—show

Huang publicly supported TSMC charging in line with its contribution. TechSpot reported him saying, “TSMC’s contribution to the world and the tech industry is under-represented by its financial results.” That expresses Huang’s view of TSMC’s value; it does not show that Nvidia agreed to or paid a higher rate.

Could a TSMC price increase make GPUs more expensive?

The cited reporting does not establish a direct effect on retail GPU prices. A possible change in what TSMC charges a customer is not the same as a confirmed change in what Nvidia charges buyers; the reports provide no pass-through amount or retail pricing decision. They therefore cannot support a prediction that a particular GPU will cost more because of TSMC’s pricing.
