Did Trump’s Tariffs Make Nintendo Raise the Switch 2 Price?

Nintendo paused U.S. Switch 2 preorders amid tariff uncertainty in 2025, then kept the announced console launch price. Accessory adjustments and a later Japan-only revision were separate.

No—not the U.S. Switch 2 console price in April 2025. Nintendo delayed U.S. preorders while it assessed possible tariff effects, but contemporaneous reports said the company kept the announced $449.99 launch price. It did adjust accessory prices. A separate price revision announced in 2026 applies to Japan, not the U.S. tariff episode.

What happened to the U.S. Switch 2 price in April 2025?

Nintendo announced Switch 2 on April 2, 2025, and set its release for June 5. Nintendo’s announcement established the product and launch date; contemporaneous news reports put the U.S. console launch price at $449.99.

After President Donald Trump announced new tariffs, Nintendo postponed the planned start of U.S. preorders to assess potential effects. When preorders resumed, the company maintained the announced console price, according to Forbes’ April 3, 2025 report and The Washington Post’s April 18, 2025 report.

Why did the headline say “price hike”?

The April 2025 tariff news created uncertainty about Nintendo’s U.S. preorder and pricing plans, but it did not establish a console price increase. The $449.99 figure is historical launch pricing reported at the time—not a verified current U.S. retail price.

Accessories were a separate change

Nintendo adjusted accessory prices during the April 2025 preorder period, as The Washington Post reported. That adjustment should not be confused with the Switch 2 console price, which remained at its announced U.S. launch price when preorders resumed.

What changed in Japan in 2026?

In a notice dated May 8, 2026, Nintendo announced price revisions for Switch 2 and other products and services in Japan, effective September 1, 2026. The company said the decision was made “In light of changes in market conditions, and after considering the global business outlook.” Nintendo’s notice does not identify a specific quantified tariff contribution.

What this means for buyers now

  • Use $449.99 only as the reported U.S. launch price from 2025, not as a current-price claim.
  • Check a retailer’s current listing and stock before buying; the cited reports do not establish present-day U.S. prices or inventory.
  • Do not infer a current tariff rate for a particular Switch 2 shipment from Nintendo’s 2025 preorder announcement.
  • Keep the 2026 Japan price revision separate from U.S. pricing unless a source specifically establishes a U.S. change.
