Not publicly, according to the February 2025 reporting behind the headline. The Washington Post reported that administration officials told agency leaders they could decide whether to follow Elon Musk’s request for federal workers to summarize their recent work. But Donald Trump publicly praised the email, saying, “I thought [the email] was great,” as Futurism reported. The story describes a clash between Musk’s warning and agency-level guidance—not a documented personal reprimand from Trump to Musk.
What set off the dispute
Over a weekend in February 2025, Musk’s DOGE team asked federal employees to send bullet-point summaries of their recent work. Musk publicly warned that employees who failed to respond could be terminated, according to Futurism’s February 25 report.

The Washington Post reported on February 24 that an Office of Personnel Management (OPM) email relaying the request did not include Musk’s termination warning. The paper also reported, citing people familiar with the matter, that administration officials told agency leaders they could decide how to handle the request—including ignoring it. That account describes reported internal guidance, not a published written order from the administration.
Who said or did what
| Actor | Action or message | What the reporting establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Elon Musk and his DOGE team | Requested bullet-point work summaries; Musk publicly warned that failure to respond could lead to termination. | Futurism reported the warning and request. |
| OPM | Sent a follow-up email relaying the request without the termination threat. | The Washington Post reported this difference between the email and Musk’s public warning. |
| Administration officials and agency leaders | Agency leaders were reportedly told they could decide whether to follow the request. | The Washington Post attributed this account to people familiar with the matter; it was not presented as an official written directive. |
| Donald Trump | Publicly praised the email: “I thought [the email] was great.” | Futurism quoted Trump. The available reporting does not document him directly reprimanding Musk. |
| Elon Musk | Later wrote, “Subject to the discretion of the President, they will be given another chance.” | Futurism quoted Musk’s post. |
The Washington Post described a federal workforce of 2.3 million in its February 24 report. That figure is not evidence that every federal employee received the same request, responded to it, or was subject to identical instructions.

So did Trump tell Musk he had crossed a line?
The headline’s wording is shorthand for the reported message to agency leaders: they had discretion to ignore Musk’s directive. The cited coverage does not establish a direct conversation in which Trump told Musk he had gone too far. In fact, Trump’s reported public response was praise for the email, while Musk’s later post acknowledged presidential discretion over whether workers would get another chance.

The reports establish a gap between Musk’s public termination warning, the less forceful OPM follow-up, and the discretion reportedly given to agency leaders. They do not establish a formal personal rebuke from Trump to Musk. Nor do the cited sources independently establish that the requested summaries were implemented as part of an AI system for assessing which jobs were necessary; Futurism described that intended use, but the available reporting does not provide primary documentation confirming implementation.
